US Department Of State Post Report

Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only the pyramids remain. Previous scholars speculated as to their purpose. One theory suggested a correlation between seven of them and the constellation Orion, with the Nile cast as the Milky Way. Egyptologists now agree that they had only one purpose, to be tombs containing all that the deceased would need for the afterlife. ...

The word “Cairo” means unconquered, and may be derived from the ancient Egyptian word for City of the Sun. From its 7th century origin, Cairo flourished as the “victorious city” under a series of Moslem rulers. Just one of its masterpieces of Islamic architecture would be the pride of a city, but Cairo has hundreds of outstanding mosques, madrassas (schools), and palaces. Inside the medieval walls, the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar flourishes. ... [Read More]

In one of the issues of the New Yorker magazine, famous for its cartoons, I came across a picture of two ancient Greeks talking on the street. ...

People are attracted to others who are like themselves. (BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER) Misfortune does not occur twice in the same way to the same person. (LIGHTNING NEVER STRIKES TWICE IN THE SAME PLACE) Large undertakings take time. (ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY) Take advantage of favorable circumstances while they last. The international profile of American football got a boost from the launch of the NFL Europe league, which provides an opportunity for some European neophytes to play against somewhat lesser American professional talents. Many of the foreigners – 90 made preseason rosters in the NFL this season – are sons of immigrants from places like Mexico or West Africa. From Colonial TimesTeam sports were an early manifestation of life in colonial North America. Predecessor games to modern-day baseball and soccer were popular among the colonists in the early 18th century, decades before America's Declar ... [Read More]

The ancient sites of the Marib Dam and Temple of the Moon at Marib are an easy day trip from Sanaa.  The “triangle” from Sanaa, west to Hodeidah on the coast, southeast to Taiz, and back to Sanaa, is a popular weekend trip.  It allows you to see the Tihama and the Red Sea coast, the medieval university city of Zabid, the famous port at Mocha, the fertile green farmlands of the southern highlands, spectacular mountain scenery, and ancient walled cities at Taiz, Jibla, and Ibb.  Adequate hotels are available both in Hodeidah and Taiz.  Group day trips may be arranged to such sites as “Job’s Tomb,” an excellent spot for experienced and novice rock climbers, the extinct volcano of Hammam Damt, the fossil fields just outside Sanaa, and several other interesting places.  Since unification in 1990, travel to Aden (formerly the capital of South Yemen and currently the “economic and commercial capital” of united Yemen) has become increasingly popular.  There a ... As you know, Mr. President, nothing effective had been done or attempted by the UN against a ruthless design to destroy the state of Israel which embodies the memories, sacrifices and hopes of an ancient people, which in this generation lost 6 million of its people brutally murdered in a tragedy without parallel in history. ...

Then I go down--I have noted a little more fully there were Tass announcements I guess on the Cairo attack. 8:00, and then there is a more full Israeli account at 9:01, indicating that Cairo has been attacked. Then we got something very important and solid. We got indications from intelligence of a whole series of airfields described by the Egyptians as unserviceable. [Editor's note: NSA chronology suggests this was not available until Rostow's second call to the President.]/5/ That was the first hard military evidence of what the Israelis were up to. It obviously represented a most purposeful and apparently efficient attempt to move against the UAR airbases. At 9:38 Eastern time we get the Jordanians indicating that the airfields and targets there had also been attacked. Well, in any case, what I just ran through is a picture of what the reports were with the President ending up with the hard information of intelligence that the Is ... [Read More]

The Martin Luther King We Remember

After so many years of oppression, a form of fatalism had sunk deep into the souls of American blacks. King illustrated the problem by comparing blacks to the children of Israel in Egypt. American blacks, like the ancient Hebrews, had come to "prefer the 'fleshpots of Egypt' to the ordeals of emancipation." King also used modern idiom to frame the issue, as when he observed that blacks suffered from "psychological slavery." He condemned such slavish acquiescence as "the way of the coward," and on numerous occasions he exhorted blacks to be prepared to give up even their lives for liberty's cause. The nonviolent method was not for the faint of heart: It "means a willingness to suffer and sacrifice," King wrote, "it may even mean physical death." ... [Read More]

Many interesting archeological and historical sites are in Bahrain. This is the largest ancient necropolis in the world with more than 100,000 grave mounds, ancient forts, temples, and city sites going back to the Dilmun era, circa 2500 BC. The Bahrain National Museum has an excellent display of both ancient Bahrain and the more recent Arab traditions. The Beit Al Qur'an houses an excellent collection of old and rare Qur'ans and is well worth a visit. Restored houses can be toured and traditional craftsmen still work in some villages. Al Jasra Handicraft Center and the Craft Center in Manama both support traditional Arab artisans.  One can tour their studios and purchase finished pieces at the gift shops. EntertainmentLast Updated:  11/17/2003 9:19 AM  ... Department of State Washington File: Transcript: U.S. Supports "Naming and Shaming" of Rights Violators

There is no one simple path or one act that prompts nations to be just, to respect and sustain human rights. Sometimes it is the conscience and moral outrage of nonvictims that makes the difference. The ancient Athenian jurist Solon said, "Justice will not come until those who are not hurt feel just as indignant as those who are." ...

The information trickling out of North Korea continues to paint a bleak picture of one of the world's most inhumane regimes. Rigid controls over information reflect the totalitarian repression of North Korean society. Basic freedoms are unheard of, and the regime committed widespread abuses of human rights. This year's U.S. Country Report on Human Rights Practices in North Korea details - among other abuses - killings, persecution of forcibly repatriated North Koreans, and harsh conditions in the extensive prison camp system including torture, forced abortions and infanticide. ...
