Egypt (08/04) Radio in Egypt almost all government controlled, using 44 short-wave frequencies, 18 medium-wave stations, and four FM stations. There are seven regional radio stations covering the country. Egyptian Radio transmits 60 hours daily overseas in 33 languages and three hundred hours daily within Egypt. In 2000, Radio Cairo introduced new specialized (thematic) channels on its FM station. So far, they include news, music, and sports. Reports, International Education Week 2001 On November 12, the Commission hosted a recital of international and American music by three Egyptian musicians Yasser El Serafy, concertmaster of the Cairo Symphony (Fulbright Scholar 96/97), Dalia Farouk, soprano, Cairo Opera House (Fulbright Scholar 2001/02) and Wael Farouk, pianist and former student of Dr. Douglas Weeks (Fulbright Scholar (98/99). Approximately 160 persons attended, including U.S. Ambassador and Mrs. C. David Welch, Deputy Chief of Mission and Mrs. Reno Harnish, and Cultural Affairs Officer Haynes Mahoney plus members of the board and a large cross-section of the Egyptian society. Reports, International Education Week 2001 Originally from Alexandria, he started to play violin at the Alexandria Conservatoire with Renato Borghese and Lisette Meguerdditchian at the age of six. He won the first prize in the National Strings Competition in 1986 and in 1988, he received a scholarship from the French government to continue his studies in Paris. He was awarded four gold medals in Violin chamber music from the Conservatoire National de RueilMalmaison and the Conservatoire National de Paris. He was invited to perform as a soloist with the Cairo Symphony Ocestra in 1991 and 1993 at the Cairo Opera House Anniversaries. Since 1993, he has been Concertmaster of the Cairo symphony Orchestra and has performed as in Paris, Rome, Geneva and in Japan at Ayoyama University, Suntory Hall, Kyoto Cocert Hall. In 1997, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study violin with Erick Friedman at Yale University (in the U.S.A). Bringing Zanzibar's Heritage to a New Generation - "Dar es Salaam, Tanzania" The lilting sounds and rhythms of Taarab music emanate from a window high in the Old Customs Building on the waterfront in Zanzibar Stone Town. Music students are practicing this distinctively Zanzibari musical style thanks to a grant from the American Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. The grant has allowed the Dhow Countries Music Academy to hire teachers and buy instruments to continue its program to preserve and promote the music of Zanzibar in Tanzania and beyond.
