Lebanon has a small agricultural sector that produces wheat, fruit, olives, bananas, and subsidized tobacco. Good wines, some now comparable in quality to the best Californian and European products, and beer also are produced locally. There is a small light industrial sector. Services, including banking, insurance, and tourism, are the most important elements of Lebanon’s economy.  There is flourishing restaurant trade, with many American franchises opened since the late 1990s. Lebanon’s once-famed hotel sector has begun reconstruction, and several luxury hotels have opened. Transportation AutomobilesLast Updated:  9/29/2003 9:41 AM Driving in Beirut ... [Read More]

2004 Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Romania

The Government increased its efforts against trafficking ,and police officers continued to pursue cases via their Human Trafficking Task Force. The police assigned 15 officers at headquarters in Bucharest and over 87 officers in 15 zonal centers across the country to investigate trafficking. Of the 87 officers assigned to zonal centers, 42 were women who had received training in antitrafficking procedures. They continued to expand interagency and local resources assigned to trafficking, and the Government established itself as a strong participant in regional law enforcement cooperation. In addition, the Government, through the Interministerial Working Group (IWG), began the process of creating an office at the national level, which would coordinate all trafficking-related matters and focus on the protection of victims. During the first 9 months of the year, police identified a total 964 victims of trafficking (573 women, 391 men). Of this number, 217 were minors (80 boys, 137 girls). ... [Read More]

The resident American population of the Eastern Province was about 13,000 in February 2001.  More than half work for Saudi ARAMCO or for petrochemical joint ventures in Jubail, 75 miles north of Dhahran.  Construction firms employ other Americans as contractors to the Saudi Defense Forces, the province’s two universities, and various joint partnerships between Saudi and American companies.  Most Americans live either on company compounds or on commercially operated housing compounds designed for foreigners.  Others reside in individual homes scattered throughout the tri-city Dammam/Al-Khobar/Dhahran area, at Jubail, or in Saudi ARAMCO camps at Ras Tanura and Abqaiq. SecurityLast Updated:  9/28/2004 11:53 AM  [Read More]
