U.S. Dept. of State - IIP: Washington File Mobile Edition Burden sharing with our key coalition partners is an emerging success story. For instance, the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, as well as the EU, and the Asian Development Bank, have significant technical assistance initiatives underway in countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Egypt. We have also funded the UN Global Program Against Money Laundering to place a yearlong mentor in the Philippines to assist with further development of its FIU. Despite its importance in the overall counterterrorism effort, and all the discussions about it, relatively few dollars are devoted to training and technical assistance for AML and CTF. Congress could strengthen this tool by fully supporting the Administration's funding request for this crucial task. ... [Read More]

Mr. Kuriyama, former Ambassador to the United States, is present here. On Ambassador Baker's table, there is an Edo period puppet -- a kind of a doll -- that can be manipulated. This doll, clad in a traditional costume, is a symbol of Japan's science and culture. This works on some mechanism, and this doll represents the origin of Japanese manufacturing. This is a replica, of course, but we brought it here to give it to you. The real thing is a national treasure, and at Ueno Museum there is a puppet and doll exhibition. But are there questions? Please raise your hand. You can ask one question at a time. ... [Read More]
The United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria: Paper presented by Dr Lydia Umar, Executive Director, Gender Action Team (GAT), Kaduna During the Round-Table Discussion on "Women's Leadership and Political Empowerment" as part of the 2003 Women's History Month Celebrations. March 18, 2003 At Lagos, Nigeria Rockwell's "Freedom from Fear" shows a husband and wife standing at the bedside of their two sleeping children. They are a plain couple. The rumpled shirt and the scuffed shoes of the husband do not convey much worldly success; the two children share one bed; and a worn-out doll on the floor also shows the family's ordinary circumstances. To relate this bedside scene to President Roosevelt's theme, one must notice the folded newspaper in the hands of the father. The front page headline -perhaps to a report from England or China --is of "bombings" and "horror." ... [Read More]
