Most Chilean holidays commemorate events important in the countrys history or celebrate traditional feast or holy days of the Catholic Church. The Fiestas Patrias, a two-day celebration in mid- September commemorating Chilean independence, is the main patriotic holiday. During this time, there are fairs (fondas), at which one will be introduced to the cueca, the national dance of Chile, and rodeos complete with Chilean cowboys (huasos). The biggest religious festivals occur around Christmas and Easter. Cuasimodo is celebrated the week after Easter Sunday throughout central Chile.
