Chile Fly In Fishing

US Department Of State Post Report

Chile offers superb trout fishing from October through mid-April in the south central part of the country and some mountain lakes. However, the nearest freshwater fishing spots are over 4 hours away by car, and ideal trout and salmon fishing streams are a day away by car, bus, or train or about 3 hours by plane. Deep-sea fishing (broadbill, swordfish, and marlin) and surfcasting, are also available but less popular. Heavy tackle (2025 pounds) is recommended. ...

Farther afield is Chiles Lake District, about 500 miles south of Santiago. Known as the Switzerland of South America, this area offers excellent trout fishing and beautiful scenery. There are also many thermal baths, pubs, hiking and horseback riding opportunities. A limited number of hotels requires advance reservations during January and February. Even further south, one can take boat trips through the channels and fiords from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas through the Straits of Magellan or visit the magnificent wilderness preserve, Torres del Paine National Park, near Punta Arenas. For island fans, there are excursions to the Juan Fernandez Islands, 360 miles off the coast at Valparaiso or a trip to Easter Island in the South Pacific. ... [Read More]

Go-fast boats are then regularly used to on/off-load drugs onto fishing vessels or other "mother" ships at sea. Go-fast boats also transport drugs to Central American and Caribbean transshipment countries, using refueling ships to extend their range. Fishing vessels and commercial cargo ships continue to be used to transport large quantities of drugs via both Atlantic and Pacific routes. Fishing vessels usually travel to Mexico or other transshipment countries, while cargo ships can go directly to the United States or Europe. The drugs are hidden in container cargo, bulk cargo, or hidden compartments built into ships. ... [Read More]

Flyfishing is available 3 hours from La Paz in streams of the lowland valleys of the Yungas. Stream fishing is as effective as lake fishing but is more difficult due to rugged terrain and fast waters. Mepps silver spinners (size 1) and other small lures are most effective. Rainbow trout found in these streams are tastier than lake trout. Better fishing may be found farther from La Paz in less fished waters via four-wheel-drive transportation. Other tropical fish, including piranha and peacock bass, are found in the warmer waters of the Beni and Santa Cruz. ... [Read More]

Fishing catches include dorado, large, gold-colored fish found only in the rivers of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. The country abounds in trout and landlocked salmon, which grow to fantastic sizes. Trout fishing with a fly rod is very popular. Bring a fairly heavy casting rod to do double-duty casting and trolling. Spinning reels are recommended. ...

In northeastern Argentina at the junction of the Argentine, Paraguayan, and Brazilian borders lies the spectacular 237 foot-high Iguazu Falls (Niagara is 167 feet high). It may be reached by a 2-day car ride or by plane. Excellent hotels are available on both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the falls. There are 14 large falls, most of them of great height and beauty. The river areas below the falls provide excellent fishing. ... [Read More]

Both surf and small boat fishing are available at Pucusana (30 miles south) and Ancon, though they are expensive and it's difficult to get small boats in summer.  Trout fishing is available at Lake Titicaca, on the Altiplano in southeast Peru about 810 miles from Lima, and in neighboring mountain streams, but not in the vicinity of the city. ...

Bring any sports equipment you plan to use here, particularly tennis and squash racquets, scuba equipment, surfboards, golf clubs, badminton sets, ping-pong, volleyball, hunting and fishing equipment, swings, plastic pools, bicycles, yard equipment for children, baseball gloves, balls, and bats.  Local equipment is expensive.  A game known as "fronton" is also popular and is similar to outdoor paddleball. ... Gove: I would concur with Ms. Clarke. The pilots that flying patrols in the no-fly zone are essentially flying combat missions, given the circumstances. Any opportunity that they have to understand the capabilities and the layout of Iraqi air-defense weapons systems is useful for their own experience base. And there has been degradation of the integrated air-defense system in Iraq, and I'm not going to comment on the extent of that. That's difficult to know if you're not on the ground. ... [Read More]

If the pet is traveling via United Airlines, it will be allowed to travel in the cabin if it is a small pet (dogs or cats). Big animals will travel as cargo in the freight compartment. If the airplane has any problems in Buenos Aires and cannot fly, United Airlines will feed the pet until the flight coming to Montevideo can fly. It will not be put in any other plane but theirs. Firearms and AmmunitionLast Updated:  7/9/2003 2:18 PM  ... [Read More]

Short-term El Nino forecasts have proved their value in Peru. There, warm (El Nino) years tend to be unfavorable for fishing; some have been marked by floods. Cold (La Nina) years are welcomed by fishermen but not by farmers, as they are frequently marked by drought and crop failures. ...

-- NOAA and the National Marine Fisheries Service are supporting the Turtle Excluder Devices program. Started in Mexico, the program has been extended to 40 countries, providing training to officials responsible for the protection of sea turtles and commercial fishing operations. The turtle excluder device, which is used with commercial shrimping operations, excludes 97 percent of the turtles encountered with minimal loss of shrimp. This is an example of balancing commercial needs with the need to protect biological resources. ... [Read More]
