US Department Of State Post Report

Embassy diplomatic personnel are able to obtain a Chilean drivers license upon presentation of a letter of introduction from the Embassy and a U.S. license. Administrative and Technical personnel may be required to take a driving test in Spanish to obtain a Chilean license, although this requirement has not been enforced. It is a good idea to arrive in Chile with an international drivers permit obtainable from AAA as it is not always convenient to apply for a Chilean drivers license immediately upon arrival. You will also need an international drivers permit to drive in surrounding countries. The local driving age minimum is 18 years. Local TransportationLast Updated:  12/8/2003 3:02 PM Santiago offers an extensive public transportation system that is used by Embassy personnel ... V. Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

Cyprus is a destination country for women trafficked from Eastern and Central Europe for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Traffickers who forced women into prostitution continued to fraudulently recruit victims for work as dancers in cabarets and nightclubs on short-term "artiste" visas, for work in pubs and bars on employment visas, or for illegal work on tourist or student visas. There was increasing evidence of Chinese women being trafficked for sexual exploitation in Cyprus. The Government of Cyprus does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. Cyprus made some progress in its anti-trafficking efforts over the past year. The new police anti-trafficking unit produced successful results and showed vigilance in combating the problem. Government recognition of the problem improve ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Byliner: Deputy USTR Shiner says Free Trade Rewards Workers

Labor leaders urge the United States to "learn the lesson of NAFTA." Well, the lesson NAFTA teaches is that open trade is good for American workers, farmers, businesses and families. After NAFTA was signed in 1993, domestic employment, farm exports, manufacturing output and real wages all increased. From 1993 to 2000, civilian employment in the U.S. economy rose by a net 16 million jobs. During that same period, U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico and Canada grew 57 percent, and U.S. manufacturing output rose by 41 percent -- even as the volume of imported manufactured goods more than doubled. U.S. manufacturing has endured a slump recently, but this has been part of a cyclical downturn, not the result of a structural problem stemming from trade. Economic indicators already show that the sector is recovering. Abandoning open markets on the cusp of an upturn could be disastrous -- a modern repeat of Smoot-Hawley protectionism that helped turn a 1930s recession into the Great Depr ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Excerpts: U.N. General Assembly Opens Week-Long Debate on Terrorism

"My own country, Pakistan, which abhors terrorism and deplores violence of all sorts and scales, did not hesitate to respect and accept the international consensus. We have always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including state terrorism. We have never condoned acts of terrorism and have been cooperating with international community in combating this universal evil. Today again, we have pledged our full support and unstinted cooperation to the fight against terrorism. ... [Read More]
