Jamaica is the third-largest Caribbean island and lies nearly 600 miles south of Miami, Florida. Slightly smaller than Connecticut, the island is 146 miles long and 51 miles across at its widest point. Except for narrow coastal plains mainly on the island's south side, the landscape is one of sharp, crested ridges, unique "cockpit" formations, and deep, twisting valleys. Almost half the island is more than 1,000 feet above sea level. Some 50% of the island is used for agriculture, 40% is woodland, and the remaining 10% is divided between mining and urban areas. ... The JDF Coast Guard (JDFCG) engages in cooperative operational planning with the U.S. Coast Guard on an intermittent basis associated with joint military operations in or near Jamaica’s territorial waters. During 2002, Jamaica participated in three deployments of Operation Rip Tide, a continuing U.S./Jamaica/Cayman Islands (UK) effort to deny smugglers the use of maritime smuggling routes into Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The bilateral maritime counternarcotics agreement was successfully exercised on several occasions during 2002, and the JDFCG for the first time requested and received U.S. operational support under the agreement. Treasury Secretary O'Neill joined British Ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer and British Virgin Islands Governor Frank Savage in signing a tax information exchange agreement with regard to the British Virgin Islands. O’Neill stated that the agreement was targeted at stopping funds associated with terrorism, money laundering, and tax evasion that often move almost effortlessly across national boundaries. ...
