COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: The Republic of Cape Verde consists of nine inhabited and several uninhabited volcanic islands off the western coast of Africa. Most are rugged and mountainous; three (Sal, Maio, and Boa Vista) are flat, desert islands with sand beaches. Praia, the capital, is on the island of Santiago, and Cape Verde’s major shipping port is Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente. Portuguese is the official language. The Amilcar Cabral International Airport is located on Sal, more than 100 miles northeast of the capital, but a new international airport in Praia is scheduled to open in 2005. The judicial system is composed of the Supreme Court and the regional courts. Of the five Supreme Court judges, one is appointed by the President, one by the National Assembly, and three by the Superior Judiciary Council. Cape Verde currently has 440,000 inhabitants and they range in ethnicity from virtually white to black: about 70% are mixed race,, 1% are white. The intermingling of European and African peoples has resulted in an intriguing synthesis of racial types. More than half the population lives on Santiago and of these about 117,000 live in Cidade de Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. The only other big city is Mindelo on São Vicente. The island of Santa Luzia is uninhabited. Women outnumber men because of emigration.
