Cape Island Portugal Verde Where

Cape Verde (04/05)

The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered the islands in 1456. African slaves were brought to the islands to work on Portuguese plantations. As a result, Cape Verdeans are of mixed African and European origin. The influence of African culture is most pronounced on the island of Santiago, where half the population resides. Sparse rain and few natural resources historically have induced Cape Verdeans to emigrate. It is believed that of the more than 1 million individuals of Cape Verdean ancestry, fewer than half actually live on the islands. Some 500,000 people of Cape Verdean ancestry live in the United States, mainly in New England. Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, France, and Senegal also have large communities. ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report

Cape Verde provided skilled sailors and workers for the whaling ships from New England and the Netherlands. Since those ships concluded their multiyear voyages by signing off the crew at their home ports, large Cape Verdean communities came into existence in New England and Northern Europe.  The first U.S. Consulate in Cape Verde was established in 1816 to protect the whaling fleet and its crews.  In the 20th Century, Cape Verdeans in the United States established themselves across the continent, and are now found as far away as Hawaii.   In all, there are more Cape Verdeans living outside the archipelago than within it, including an estimated 350,000 in America.  Senegal and Angola each have tens of thousands of Cape Verdeans.  There are emigrants in Portugal, Italy, Luxembourg, France (10-15,000) and Holland (8-10,000).  There are substantial numbers in Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Sweden.  These processes have given Cape Verde its internationa ... About STP - US Embassy, Libreville

The total population of STP is less than 150,000, over 40% of which is under the age of 14. The majority of Sao Tomeans are descended from either slaves imported to the island to work the cocoa plantations, their Portuguese masters, or a mix of both. There is also a sizable community of contract laborers from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and their descendants. ...

In the 19th century, the islands' traditional sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. The island's economy has become increasingly dependent on cocoa since independence. Considerable potential exists for development of a tourist industry, and the government has taken steps to expand facilities in recent years. Sao Tome is also optimistic that significant petroleum discoveries are forthcoming in its territorial waters in the oil-rich waters of the Gulf of Guinea. ... [Read More]
