Sal Cape Verde

Cape Verde (04/05)

Cape Verde's strategic location at the crossroads of mid-Atlantic air and sea lanes has been enhanced by significant improvements at Mindelo's harbor (Porto Grande) and at Sal's international airport. Ship repair facilities at Mindelo were opened in 1983, and the harbors at Mindelo and Praia were recently renovated. The major ports are Mindelo and Praia, but all other islands have smaller port facilities. In addition to the international airport on Sal, airports have been built on all of the inhabited islands. All but the airport on Brava enjoy scheduled air service. The archipelago has 3,050 kilometers (1,830 mi.) of roads, of which 1,010 kilometers (606 mi.) are paved. ... [Read More]

Cape Verde

COUNTRY DESCRIPTION:  The Republic of Cape Verde consists of nine inhabited and several uninhabited volcanic islands off the western coast of Africa.  Most are rugged and mountainous; three (Sal, Maio, and Boa Vista) are flat, desert islands with sand beaches.  Praia, the capital, is on the island of Santiago, and Cape Verde’s major shipping port is Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente.  Portuguese is the official language.  The Amilcar Cabral International Airport is located on Sal, more than 100 miles northeast of the capital, but a new international airport in Praia is scheduled to open in 2005.  While the tourist industry brings ever-growing numbers of tourists, facilities on many islands remain limited.  Sal has the most developed tourist industry and all interna ... Workers and management in the small private sector, as well as in the public sector, normally reach agreement through negotiations. Although there are no collective labor contracts, workers succeeded in negotiating important issues such as salary increases. However, as the country's largest employer, the Government continued to play the dominant role in setting wages. It does not fix wages for the private sector, but salary levels for civil servants provide the basis for wage negotiations in the private sector. ... [Read More]

d. Arbitrary Arrest, Detention, or ExileThe law prohibits arbitrary arrest and detention, and the Government generally observed these prohibitions. The law stipulates that a suspect must be charged before a judge within 48 hours of arrest. Police may not make arrests without a court order unless a person is caught in the act of committing a felony. The courts had jurisdiction over state security cases, and there was a functioning system of bail. The Government did not use forced exile. e. Denial of Fair Public Trial The Constitution provides for an independent judiciary, and the Government generally respected this provision in practice. The Constitution provides for the right to a fair trial and due process, and an independent judiciary generally enforces this right. Cases involving former public office holders continued under investigation. For ex ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report

There is one primary approved route to reach Cape Verde from the U.S. - any of several U.S. carriers to Lisbon, then either TAP (Portuguese Airline) or TACV from Lisbon to Sal. An overnight in Lisbon is recommended. TACV also has connections from Amsterdam, Paris, and Munich, but reservations and schedules can be changed without notice. The direct SAA (South African) flight from Atlanta to Sal Island (one day a week), while it is listed as code-share with a U.S. airline to Johannesburg, is NOT code-share to Sal, so is presumed not to meet Fly America requirements.  It is also possible to fly NYC/Dakar/Praia, but because the flight is difficult, there is an absolute limit of 20 kilos of luggage per person, and schedules change without notice.  That flight is never recommended. If flying from other geographic areas, check with the Embassy in advance. ... [Read More]
