Without a doubt, it's the internationally recognized music of Cape Verde that holds center stage.  Music underpins Cape Verdean life.  There are several musical forms that have evolved over the last 500 years.  Some are essentially European, some are African and many lie in between the two.  Latin American and Brazilian rhythms and styles can also be recognized.  For such a small country, the variety of music seems unending.  Types of music range from the more traditional, Portuguese-influenced Morna, with its bittersweet, melancholy sound created from the interplay of guitars and violins, to the livelier Funana with its African roots and unique percussion based rhythms.  Like the Funana, the Tabanka and Batuko contain powerful rhythms, simple harmonies and much repetition.  Another principal form of traditional music is the popular Coladera, which is a fast, danceable music with singing that is influenced by Afro-American music.  Music maki ... The United States should also live up to its obligations under WTO rules. In particular, the Administration needs the assistance of the Congress to come into compliance in cases dealing with the FSC / ETI law, the 1916 Act, the “Irish Music” copyright violation, the “Byrd Amendment,” section 211 of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 1998, and hot-rolled steel. We recognize that each matter involves sensitive interests. Yet America should keep its word, just as we insist others must do. As the largest trading nation, the WTO rules serve U.S. interests. We will work closely with the Congress to determine approaches to resolve these issues. ... [Read More]

Many talented groups of Ecuadorian musicians offer concerts and perform in the folk and jazz music houses. The music of the Andes is especially known for its use of pipes, guitars, percussion instruments, and the “charango,” a mandolinlike instrument fashioned from the body of an armadillo. For those who prefer a different kind of popular music, several good discotheques are located in town. ...
