Department of State Washington File: Fact Sheet: U.S., Coalition Forces Boosting Iraqi Military Capability

• Reconstruction gained momentum in the Nissan District of Eastern Baghdad, where major sewer and water projects broke ground in Kamaliya and Oubaidi. After completing a site survey, workers began on the project that will ultimately create a sewer network serving 8,870 homes in Kamaliya. The area has never had underground sewage lines and relies on slit trenches, which leads to sewage pooling in the streets. The project will cost about $27 million and will employ 600 local workers at peak construction times. As the sewer project takes shape, an existing water distribution system will be rehabilitated. About 5,435 homes are slated to receive connections to the water main. ... [Read More]

Bermuda’s laws restrict passenger vehicles to a maximum of 169 inches in overall length and 67 inches in overall width, with a maximum engine capacity of 2,000cc (2.0 liters).  There are technical restrictions that might bar some vehicles, such as sports cars or unusual models, so check with the Consulate General before shipping any car.  Most cars in Bermuda are of Japanese manufacture (Mitsubishi, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda, etc.). Volkswagen, British Ford, Hyundai, Peugeot, BMW, Renault, and various other makes are also sold here.  Bermudians drive on the left, so almost all cars are right-hand drive although right-hand drive cars are not compulsory.  Because most roads are narrow and winding, with no shoulder and bordered by stone walls, Bermuda’s speed limit is 35 km/h (21.7 mph). ... 1 1 10/24/04 1 1 CA-9, near Palín: At approximately 8:30 a.m., one foreigner and three Guatemalan family members were traveling south from Guatemala City to Escuintala, when they stopped their vehicle at the side of the road. Five men on foot rapidly approached their car, several of the men carrying weapons similar to those issued to the local police. After firing a threatening shot, the assailants order the family to walk to the woods, away from the highway. A foreigner and a national were ordered away from the group and were raped. The attackers robbed the group of their valuables and returned to the car to steal more items. Remarkably, within five minutes of the attackers fleeing, members of the National Police found the victims at the scene of the crime, some distance from the highway, before an ... [Read More]
