The U.S.-Canada Relationship Over the past two years we have expanded our NEXUS program for trusted travelers. NEXUS is operating at eleven high-volume border crossings. On the first of March, the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge at Niagara Falls became the first wholly NEXUS passenger vehicle border crossing. We also hope to extend this program to include air travelers, and we are developing pilot programs for NEXUS-Air. ... Three-mile backups at major crossings like Niagara-Buffalo and Windsor-Detroit are all too common. Space and infrastructure limitations and staffing issues are vexing. Impacts on business are serious and are forcing changes in how our companies do business. Tourism is down, not just because of SARS or differences in political opinions, but also due to the public’s perception that crossing the border is becoming a hassle. ... [Read More]

Webster-Ashburton Treaty During Daniel Webster’s first term as Secretary of State (1841-1843), the primary foreign policy issues involved Great Britain. These included the northeast borders of the United States, the involvement of American citizens in the Canadian rebellion of 1837, and the suppression of the international slave trade. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty, signed August 9, 1842, resolved these frictions in Anglo-American relations. On April 4, 1842, British Foreign Secretary Lord Ashburton arrived in Washington at the head of a special mission to the United States. The first order of business was settling the border between the United States and Canada. Several disputes had arisen from differing interpretations of the 1783 Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. When these differences led New Brunswick officials to arrest some Americans in disputed areas, Maine called out the mili ... [Read More]
Traveling the Long Road to Freedom, One Step at a Time As Cohen approaches Niagara Falls and the yawning chasm betweenthe American and Canadian shores, sunlit mist from the fallsthrows a sentimental, pinkish glow on the scene. At first, Cohencan't believe he's arrived; he's hopping with excitement, almostleaping into the air with each step. ... This particular leg's duration, he knows, stretches 37 miles. Itwill keep him at a dogtrot until past sunrise. All night long, the sound of his footfalls will move across fields, swamps andsuburban backyards; often he'll come close enough to houses tosee what's on TV inside. There are few lights. Fortunately, thetowpath is an easily followed conduit to the Niagara River andCanada beyond, just as it was for fugitive slaves. ... [Read More]
Remarks at African American History Month Celebration Even in their initial meeting it's very significant they call it the Niagara Movement because they tried to reach Niagara Falls in the United States and there was no hotel that would take them. So they moved the meeting to Niagara Falls in Canada and they soon called it the Niagara Movement. ... In these days, it's very important for us to begin to see how we get to know one another. I was interested that the Association for the Center of African American Life and History made the theme for this month the Niagara Movement. The Niagara Movement was a movement, was really the first protest movement in the black community. But it cannot stand alone because it has to be shown that during slavery there was the abolitionist movement of black and white people who worked against slavery, and that all the way through that whole movement there was that kind of an effort. ... US Department Of State Post Report Inside are spectacular open views to Major’s Hill Park, the Byward Market, Parliament Hill, and the Ottawa River. Interior common areas are rich in terrazzo, stone, hardwoods, and stainless steel. The selection of maple as the primary wood finish used throughout the building is natural, considering the maple leaf as a symbol of Canada. Furniture in the offices and workspaces feature case goods of maple veneer. The maple leaf theme is carried into all reception areas throughout the building. A pattern of stars punctuated with an occasional maple leaf is cut into the Niagara blue mohair velvet which covers all seating in these areas. Even the choice of color and type of fabric reflects the shared experience, close relationship and free trade association between the United States and Canada — Niagara blue because of the shared beauty of Niagara Falls; and mohair because of its strength, durability, and the warmth it provides in our shared climates along the northern border of the U.S. and ...
