Challenges and Opportunities in U.S.-Canada Relations

After fifteen years of free trade, beginning with the Free Trade Agreement in 1989 and now with NAFTA, the United States and Canada know how much trade liberalization helps our economies, helps our companies, helps our farmers, helps our consumers, and helps our workers. Trade has tripled, wages have risen, jobs have multiplied, and hundreds--if not thousands--of new companies have been established as a result. But we still need to do a better job of communicating that message--and those benefits--not only in our own countries, but to other nations in our Hemisphere and to the world. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Text: U.S. Envoy to Canada Speaks on Success of NAFTA

Without question, the success of free trade speaks for itself. Look at the statistics. Since the signing of the FTA in 1989, merchandise trade between Canada and the U.S. has more than doubled from $159 billion to $365 billion (in 1999), or about $1 billion in two way trade crossing the border every day of the year. In a single year (1999), total U.S.-Canada trade rose by almost 10 percent. That increment, just one year's increase, $34.7 billion, is more than our total goods trade with Italy ($32.5 billion), or with the Netherlands ($27.9 billion). We trade more with the province of Ontario than we do with Germany, and almost as much as with Japan. In point of fact, Canada is our largest export market in the world and the Province of Ontario ranks second above any other country. In 1999, U.S. exports to Canada of just transportation equipment ($40.8 billion), was larger than our total goods exported to Germany & Italy combined ($36.9 billion). U.S. goods exports to NAFTA countr ... [Read More]
