United States Embassy Cameroon: Marine Security Guard Detachment

Since 1800 the Marines have been in the forefront protecting American lives and property. In 1835, we can find the first recorded instance of direct protective support of an American diplomatic mission. During the next 70 years, scores of landings were made by Marines to provide this protective support to foreign service missions and American communities in periods of unusual turmoil. Because of the increased intelligence activities of various foreign nations following World War II, it became apparent to Congress that a pressing need existed for around-the-clock protection of United States diplomatic missions abroad by alert and reliable American personnel. This need was enacted into law with the passage of the Foreign Service Act of 1946. "The Secretary of the Navy is authorized, upon the request of the Secretary of State, to assign enlisted members of the Navy and the Marine Corps to serve as custodians under supervision of the Principal Officer at an Embassy, Legation or Cons ... US Department Of State Post Report

According to the 1996 constitution, National Assembly deputies are elected by universal suffrage for 4-year terms. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for spring 2002. The Assembly holds regular sessions twice a year, starting in March and October, and can hold special sessions as necessary and called by the prime minister. Deputies elect a president of the National Assembly every 2 years. Assembly deputies or members of the executive branch may introduce legislation; once passed by the Assembly, the president must take action to either sign or reject the law within 15 days. The National Assembly must approve the prime minister’s plan of government and may force the prime minister to resign through a majority vote of no-confidence. However, if the National Assembly rejects the executive branch’s program twice in 1 year, the president may disband the Assembly and call for new legislative elections. In practice, the president exercises considerable influence over the National Assembly ... [Read More]

Special InformationLast Updated:  1/16/2004 5:56 AM Senegal is one of the most stable countries in the region. The internal threat in Senegal is minimal. An ongoing separatist insurgency in the Casamance region of southern Senegal continues to pose a security risk.  For the first time in a number of years, however, there are reasonable expectations for peace in the Casamance.  The Government of Senegal and one of the three armed groups recently agreed to a timeline for pacifying the northern part of the Casamance between Gambia and the city of Ziguinchor.  The government is also accelerating efforts to re-establish "normal" economic and social life to provide an alternative to the rebellion.  In addition to the prolonged insurgency, armed bandits and la ... Frequently Asked Historical Questions

Originally the seal was meant to symbolize the beliefs and values of the founding fathers and the new nation. The red and white stripes of the shield represent the states united under and supporting the blue, representing the Chief and Congress. White symbolizes purity and innocence, red signifies hardiness and valor, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The shield is supported solely by the American eagle to denote that Americans should rely on their own virtue. The number 13, symbolic of the 13 original colonies, is displayed in the bundle of arrows, the stripes of the shield, and the stars in the constellation. The olive branch and the arrows display the power of peace and war. A new nation taking its place among established, sovereign states is represented by the constellation of stars. The motto E Pluribus Unum expresses the union of the 13 states. ... [Read More]

United States Libraries in South Africa: Topics--Economic Affairs

This report reviews developments in international economic policy, including exchange rate policy, during the second half of 2004. The report is required under the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, which states that: "The Secretary of the Treasury shall analyze on an annual basis the exchange rate policies of foreign countries, in consultation with the International Monetary Fund, and consider whether countries manipulate the rate of exchange between their currency and the United States dollar for purposes of preventing effective balance of payments adjustments or gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade." After reviewing developments in the United States, the report evaluates exchange rate policies in major economies across five regions of the world - the Western Hemisphere; Europe and Eurasia; Sub-Saharan Africa; the Middle East and North Africa; and South and East Asia. 1 ...
