Cameroon Mountain

US Department Of State Post Report

Three nearby towns (1 to 1½ hours drive from Douala) offer quiet diversions from the bustle of the city. Buea is charmingly situated at the base of Mt. Cameroon, West Africa’s highest mountain, and is the starting point for hikes to the summit. The Mountain Hotel has a swimming pool and good food. Limbe is a quaint ocean-side town with black volcanic sand beaches and a botanical garden. Several hotels are available and have swimming pools. Kribi has sparklingly white sand beaches and is the beach most frequented by expatriates. There are many hotels available. A good highway connects Yaounde and Douala in about 3 hours. Distant drives can also be made to Foumban, Bamenda, and Dschang in the western, mountainous sections of the country. ... [Read More]

Chad (02/05)

The country’s topography is generally flat, with the elevation gradually rising as one moves north and east away from Lake Chad. The highest point in Chad is Emi Koussi, a mountain that rises 3,100 meters (10,200 ft.) in the northern Tibesti Mountains. The Ennedi Plateau and the Ouaddaï highlands in the east complete the image of a gradually sloping basin, which descends toward Lake Chad. There also are central highlands in the Guera region rising to 1,500 meters (4,900 ft.). ... [Read More]

Vol 39 No 3, July - September 2001 Page 44

The greatest cycling innovation in recent years is the creation of the mountain bike. Designed for steep dirt trails, it has wide knobby tires, low gears, and front and rear suspension. Since the early days of mountain biking in northern California and Colorado in the late 1970s, when a handful of riders rebuilt old bikes to make them more suitable for off-road riding, mountain bikes have become a multi-million-dollar industry within an industry. In many shops in the United States, mountain bikes outsell the skinny-tire bicycles intended for paved roads. An entirely new branch of bicycle racing evolved quickly. It features cross-country races on dirt tracks and trails, somewhat similar to motocross, as well as downhill race ... [Read More]

Sao Tome and Principe (04/05)

The islands of Sao Tome and Principe, situated in the equatorial Atlantic about 300 and 250 kilometers (200 mi. and 150 mi.), respectively, off the northwest coast of Gabon, constitute Africa's smallest country. Both are part of an extinct volcanic mountain range, which also includes the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea to the north and Mount Cameroon on the African west coast. Sao Tome is 50 kilometers (31 mi.) long and 32 kilometers (20 mi.) wide and the more mountainous of the two islands. Its peaks reach 2,024 meters (6,640 ft.). Principe is about 30 kilometers (19 mi.) long and 6 kilometers (4 mi.) wide. Swift streams radiating down the mountains through lush forest and cropland to the sea cross both islands. ...
