U.S. Agricultural Office Reaches Out to the Gulf - Dubai, UAE

From February 20-23, 2005, Dubai hosted the “Tenth Gulf Food, Hotel & Equipment Exhibition”, the Middle East’s largest food and hospitality-related exhibition. U.S. Ambassador Michele J. Sison opened the U.S.A. pavilion and then escorted H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, through the USA Pavilion (see photos above). The USA Pavilion occupied 800 square meters, contained 80 booths and featured 60 companies exhibiting a broad range of U.S. fresh, canned, frozen and dried foods. While U.S. products in general were well received, U.S. meats and health foods drew strong interest from the 30,000 trade visitors from 126 countries that attended this year’s show. USA Pavilion visitation showed a strong mix of traditional Gulf Region U.S. trade partners as well as new trade contacts, and included six USDA-organized trade missions from Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. These missions represented U.S. Agr ... [Read More]

International Information Programs, U.S. Department of State, Economic Perspectives, February 2001 -- Reforming the International Financial Institutions

One example of my concern: On the very same day that Uganda, one of the initial countries targeted for debt forgiveness, qualified for debt relief, its president bought himself a $32 million luxury Gulf Stream jet to get himself around the country. The "good" news appears to be that the jet originally was to have cost $47 million. But that pales beside the bad news, which is, of course, that $32 million might have done hard-working, poor Ugandans a lot of good if used to promote economic growth instead. ... [Read More]

March 2001 Foreword Your trip to Africa will be an adventure off the beaten path. Conditions and customs in sub-Saharan Africa can contrast sharply with those in the United States. These pages contain advice to help you avoid inconvenience and difficulties. Take our advice seriously but don’t let it keep you at home. Most Americans have unforgettable experiences in Africa. We are often welcomed and helped by Africans who are happy to share not just their scenery, but their culture and tradition ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report

Local beef, pork, and mutton are relatively good, somewhat expensive, and available in ample supply. Some meats are currently imported into NDjamena. Only French- and European-style cuts are offered. Local chickens are small and somewhat tough if bought at the market. A farm operating from a small village near NDjamena offers better quality poultry. Large Nile perch, known locally as capitaine, and other high-quality freshwater fish from the Chari River are available in season, but are somewhat expensive. Two local food stores sell imported pats, salami, sausages, frozen fish, and shellfish, and other frozen foods. All are expensive. Eggs can be bought in some of the food stores or from vendors on the street in front of supermarkets. ... [Read More]
