US Department Of State Post Report
In November 1979, a Community Liaison Office (CLO) was established in Yaounde. The management officer and the CLO coordinator are the first contacts at post. On receipt of an assignment cable, post issues a TM-2 cable with initial shipping instructions and a CLO welcome cable with general information. Subsequently, the CLO provides information regarding suggested items to pack and suggested consumables. The CLO coordinates the post sponsor program and advises newcomers of their sponsor’s name. On arrival at post, their sponsor and the post expediter meet all personnel at the airport. Sponsors coordinate all first day appointments and courtesy contacts within the Mission and schedules the security and health unit briefings within the first week for both employees and their dependents. In addition, sponsors orient newcomers to the post community, schools, shopping, and recreation immediately after arrival. On August 31, police arrested Richard Nde, a reporter of the Guardian Post, for libel in the town of Bamenda in Northwest Province after he wrote an article in which he claimed that the mayor of Kumbo in the Northwest Province had embezzled funds. However, many journalists said that he was arrested because his newspaper published a number of articles prior to the presidential election that were critical of the incumbent. Several religious denominations operate primary and secondary schools. Although post-secondary education continues to be dominated by state institutions, private schools affiliated with religious denominations, including Catholic, Protestant, and Koranic schools, have been among the country's best schools at the primary and secondary levels for many years. The Ministry of Education is charged by law with ensuring that private schools run by religious groups meet the same standards as state-operated schools in terms of curriculum, building quality, and teacher training. The international theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day is the media in conflict and post conflict zones and in countries in transitions – which to me seems like a broad catch all theme and I’m sure might have some of you in the audience thinking it has nothing to do with Cameroon. Sadly much of Africa can be described as being in conflict or post conflict.
