In early June, soldiers at a military garrison near the intendance roundabout in Yaounde brutalized and stripped naked Amelie, a young female soccer player with "Canon-filles," a Yaounde-based soccer team.  Amelie was returning home with her boyfriend when the soldiers demanded her identification.  The gendarmes accused her of holding a fake national identity card with a female name, and, after beating Amelie, the soldiers decided to strip her naked publicly to verify her gender, only to realize that she had spoken the truth and her identity card was authentic. ... Membership is open to the international and Cameroonian community to take advantage of the school’s sports, restaurant and recreational facilities. Facilities include: a swimming pool and toddler’s pool supervised by lifeguards; four tennis courts, two of which are lighted; a combination volleyball and basketball court; a Ping-pong table; Video Club (DVDs); The Parrot’s Club Canteen, a bar and full-service restaurant; and, a multipurpose hall, which may be rented for private parties. The campus is a sprawling green space with a soccer pitch, tennis courts, playground, classrooms and break areas, science and computer labs, music rooms, gym, health unit, dormitory, etc.  There are 275 students from 23 countries.  Twelve of the 37 teachers on staff hold advanced degrees beyond a Bachelor of Arts or Science.  Some 50-70 percent of the staff are American.  The focus of students is academics, sports, and social activities (parties, theatrical rehearsals and productions, musicals, campouts, etc. AP (Advanced Placement) courses offered are: Advanced Biology, African literature, World literature, Calculus, Computer II, French IV, and Psychology.
