A car is essential in Brunei, especially if you live in an outlying residential district. Driving is on the left. Right-hand-drive vehicles are recommended. Left-hand-drive vehicles can be used but must be re-exported upon completion of tour. The Brunei Government has firm policies on the importation of used cars. Imported used cars cannot exceed 5 years of age. Tinted windows are not permitted in Brunei. Imported vehicles may require some modifications before licensing (e.g., all imported cars must have a catalytic converter and tail and headlights must meet local color requirements).
