Completion of the U.S. HIV/AIDS Emergency Plan Five-Year Strategy and 2005 Country Operational Plan for Botswana - "Gaborone Botswana" On Thursday, November 4, U.S. Ambassador Joseph Huggins will host a reception at his residence to thank the U.S.-Botswana-International team for its completion of the U.S. Mission’s Five-Year HIV/AIDS Strategy 2004-2008 and 2005 Country Operational Plan (COP) for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Partners included the government of Botswana, the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Thanks to the participatory planning process used to develop the plans, PEPFAR activities will be well coordinated with other HIV/AIDS initiatives and are strongly aligned with Botswana’s HIV/AIDS priorities. Under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, America and Botswana are partners in building a future free from AIDS. ... The U.S. supports the provision of HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and care in more than 100 nations, with a focus on 15 nations that are collectively burdened with half of the world’s infections. Botswana is one of these focus nations, and thus is benefiting from intensive U.S. investment. Through the President’s Emergency Plan, the U.S. government works hand-in-hand with the government of Botswana and other partners to reduce new HIV infections and mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS. U.S. Embassy Donates HIV/AIDS Books to NACA - "Gaborone Botswana" The collection consists of 48 titles that cover various HIV/AIDS issues ranging from hospice care, stories of encouragement, caregivers and behavior change. The books are very readable. Most suit the information needs of those dealing at the grass-roots level of the HIV/AIDS crisis, although serious researchers would also benefit from the collections. Botswana UNAIDS estimated that 37.4 percent of persons between the ages of 15 and 49 were infected with HIV/AIDS. UNICEF reported there were approximately 112,000 orphans in the country, due largely to deaths from HIV/AIDS; however, 28 percent of babies born from HIV positive mothers were protected from the virus, largely as a result of the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission Program. As of December, the Government had registered approximately 47,000 orphans. Once registered, orphans may receive food baskets and school uniforms. Many children, mostly believed to be orphans, became beggars in urban areas, and some became prostitutes. Relatives continued to deny inheritance rights to orphans. ... [Read More]
A Profile of Chris Talley: Peace Corps Volunteer in Mochudi - "Gaborone Botswana" I am responsible for Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS programs in my office. I collect the monitoring tools and help individuals complete the forms. On occasion, I will go out to a village site to advise Village AIDS Committees (VMSACs) or visit a non-governmental organization to collect a report or offer them technical assistance. I present reports at District Multi-Sectoral AIDS Committee (DMSAC) meetings. I develop the funding allocation for our district and follow up with departments and organizations that have not yet spent their funding.
