Born in Chicago, Ms. Parker first came to South Africa in 1984 and worked for a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer for seven years, training and educating the medical profession on the products and then launching a veterinary division for the company. She was also involved with the successful launch of Harley Davidson in South Africa in 1996. She then returned to the US and worked for a leading Conference Center, Resort and Country Club in Texas. Ms. Parker came back to South Africa in 2001 and has worked for the Sheraton, Hyatt and now the Saxon hotels. She has dealt with many corporate clients, government officials, celebrities and trade missions from a variety of different countries and cultures. She has traveled throughout the US, Europe and the Middle East. I can remember the District AIDS Fair Steering Committee complaining about how distant the Fundraising Sub-committee was from their target of P4,000. I was motivated to step in and assist them. I decided to complete the donation drive from DMSAC members and raised P170 in one day -- twice the amount raised at that point. I knew that the goal could be reached, and eventually decided to take matters into my own hands. I called the committee together in my office and organized them with a plan of action. We had only six weeks to raise the money needed to finance the cost of the AIDS fair. Working closely with the Chairperson, I organized them into six groups to approach local businesses and asked them to report back at each subcommittee meeting. At each meeting, we got closer and closer to our goal. We raised money from local businesses and got a donation of dinner tickets from the Gaborone Sun Hotel to raffle away. The World Economic Forum's Africa Competitiveness Report 2000-2001, published in conjunction with the Harvard Institute for International Development, has top-ranked Tanzania in a survey of African nations' efforts to improve economic and investment conditions. The Report, issued in July, placed Tanzania number one out of twenty-four countries on its index for the correction of initial economic conditions in recent years. The Report also ranked Tanzania number two on the African continent for optimism for future growth. Harvard Professor Jeffrey Sachs, a co-author of the report, visited Tanzania in July to encourage continued economic reform on Tanzania's part, as well as stronger efforts on the part of western donor countries to cancel Tanzania's remaining external debts.
