The "U.S. Takeover of the Amazon Forest" Myth - US Department of State

The forgery, pictured below, purports to be page 76 of a U.S. sixth grade textbook titled An Introduction to Geography by David Norman. There is no indication that such a book exists. The U.S. Library of Congress, with more than 29 million books and other printed materials, has no record of it. The Online Computer Learning Center's WorldCat database, the world's largest database of bibliographic information with more than 47 million books, has no record of the book. New Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America

Those of us who spend a great deal of time abroad or read history understand the influence geography has on culture and national identity. The Andes, as you all know, is largely a mountainous region… partly forested… rich in natural resources and impediments to the work of civilization. It is a land of many peoples, and the very land that sustains them with its generous gifts… separates them as well. The final salient geographic fact that I will mention is the region’s proximity and importance to the United States. ... [Read More]

Policy and Program Developments

Overview for 2000For U.S. international antidrug programs, the year 2000 was one of important accomplishments and serious challenges. Long-term cooperation with our Western Hemisphere allies continued to bear fruit. We successfully attacked drug crop expansion, enhanced interdiction efforts, worked to arrest leaders of drug trafficking syndicates, and narrowed the opportunities for the drug trade to launder drug profits. At the same time, we provided our partners essential training assistance to strengthen their law enforcement and judicial systems, while helping them with programs to reduce drug consumption in their own countries. The year’s most noteworthy accomplishment was to keep the total Andean coca crop from expanding significantly. Six years of joint ... [Read More]

Transparency and the Rule of Law in Latin America

INL's assistance for law enforcement and other judicial-sector officials varies significantly among the 30 countries with which we work in Latin America and the Caribbean. The focus is on developing already-established police forces. Factors such as geography, level of development, host-nation capacity, political will, drug trafficking and criminal threat levels help to determine the type and level of assistance provided. ... Policy and Program Developments

Each year, we revise our estimates in the light of field research. The clandestine, violent nature of the illegal drug trade makes such field research difficult. Geography is also an impediment, as the harsh terrain on which many drugs are cultivated is not always easily accessible This is particularly relevant given the tremendous geographic areas that must be covered, and the difficulty of collecting reliable information over diverse and treacherous terrain. ...
