The South Africa-United States Fulbright Commission will host a seminar in collaboration with All Africa House, University of Cape Town. This event will also serve as the first meeting of Fulbright alumni in the Cape Town area. The title of the seminar is, "African Roots of African American Theatre" and the speaker will be Fulbright U.S. senior scholar, Professor Charles Dumas, who is currently teaching and doing research at the University of Stellenbosch. To open the Seminar and commemorate IEW, South African Fulbright alumnus, Dr Terence Fredericks, will give a short talk on "The Impact of Global Education - rights and co-existence." ... [Read More]

The overall trend for human rights and democracy in Burkina Faso is guardedly positive, though there are numerous areas for concern and improvement. Political rights, particularly the right to change their government, are not fully exercised, the judiciary is subject to executive influence and individual members of security forces continue to commit human rights abuses. To address these issues, the U.S. Embassy in Burkina Faso initiated a number of program and advocacy support to draw attention to international human rights norms, to emphasize accountability and transparency in government, enhance capacity building of political parties and further ease political tensions. The focus for many of these efforts is the 2005 municipal and presidential elections. USIS English Teacher Training Activities in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Ministry of Education has adopted the outcomes-based approach to education (OBE) as the structure for its national transformation process, popularly known as "Curriculum 2005." To help parents and the educational community better understand this new paradigm, American educator William Spady -- a leading authority on OBE -- visited South Africa last fall under the auspices of USIS and the Agency for International Development. Dr. Spady is director of Breakthrough Learning Systems, located in Colorado, and is a popular speaker on organizational change, transformational leadership, and strategic planning. His many publications include the 1994 book Outcome-Based Education: Critical Issues and Answers. Ouagadougou is home to the UN’s world headquartersfor the eradication of River Blindness, and several U.S. and European Universities havestudy programs bringing students or researchers to Burkina Faso. Burkina also has severalspecialized research centers within the country, many with connections to Frenchorganizations. One of the most important tropical disease research centers in West Africais headquartered in Bobo-Dioulasso. L’Organization de Coordination et de laCooperation pour la Lutte Contre les Grandes Endemic (OCCGE) operates jointly with theMedical Entomology Center and the Muraz Medical Center. Several other institutes inOuagadougou carry on social science studies and work in agricultural and economicdevelopment.
