Department of State Washington File: Text: U.S. on Freedom of Belief to OSCE "Human Dimension" Review

The U.S. welcomes the decision by the Greek government to remove religious designations from the national identity card. We call on all OSCE nations which continue to include potentially discriminatory data on their national ID cards to take a similar step. ...

We commend President Aliyev for his strong policy statement in late 1999 calling for full recognition of religious freedom in Azerbaijan and urge all levels of government to fully implement this policy. We look forward to seeing the outcome of the upcoming experts' conference in Baku, which we hope will bring the law on religion into line with Azerbaijan's stated policy. ... [Read More]

Cyprus (07/05)

On April 23, 2003, Mr. Denktash relaxed many restrictions on individuals crossing between the two communities, including abolishing all crossing fees. Since then, the relaxed crossing procedures have led to relatively unimpeded bicommunal contact for the first time since 1974. Since April 2003 there have been over 7,000,000 buffer zone crossings in both directions. Greek Cypriots are currently required to present identity documents at the checkpoints along the buffer zone, something many are reluctant to do. Greek Cypriots are permitted to drive their personal vehicles in the Turkish Cypriot community, provided they first obtain a policy from an insurance provider in the north. Turkish Cypriots are permitted to cross into the government-controlled area upon presentation of a Turkish Cypriot ID card. Turkish Cypriots must also obtain car insurance from an insurer in the south to drive their personal vehicles in the government-controlled area. ... [Read More]

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES:   Bulgaria is still largely a cash economy.  Due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity, credit cards should be used sparingly and with extreme caution.  There have been reports of false ATM fronts on bona fide machines that capture cards and PINs for later criminal use, including unauthorized charges or withdrawals.  In connection with such scams, travelers should be extremely wary of friendly bystanders near ATMs who offer assistance.  Any time a card is not returned the traveler should immediately report the card as lost/stolen to the card-issuing company.  ...
