AERA, CLO, and the Marine Security Guard Detachment work together to organize holiday gatherings for the Embassy community and friends. The annual Marine Birthday Ball is one of the highlights of the fall season, followed by the International Women’s Club (IWC) Charity Bazaar in early December. Opportunities abound to devote time to charity. A series of activities were conducted within the Bulgarian–American Fulbright Commission OPEN DOORS, November 12–16. The Advising Center, the Reference Library and the Test Prep Center were opened for public eight hours a day. Video-sessions on education in the United States were presented daily from 2:00-4:00pm. Major topics of the sessions were: undergraduate study in the U.S.; graduate study in the U.S.; successful M.B.A. admissions; Fulbright grants and other scholarships; and student visas. Bulgarian students, applying to U.S. universities and colleges, were given the opportunity to get in contact with visiting Fulbright lecturers and students. Workshops were organized on college search; filling out application forms; writing a winning college application essay/graduate personal statement, testing and tests. The Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission made the most of the excellent opportunity the second annual International Education Week gave international educators to heighten the awareness of U.S. educational system and the advantages of international education. Nearly 300 students, teachers, lecturers and researchers visited the Fulbright Advising Center and were consulted on the educational system in the U.S.; opportunities to study, research and lecture in American colleges and universities; how to apply to U.S. educational institutions both on undergraduate and graduate level; university search; American standardized tests; sources of financial aid; filling our of application forms.
