The Fulbright Commission made the most of the excellent opportunity the third annual International Education Week gave international educators to heighten the awareness of U.S. educational system and the advantages of international education. Nearly 40 secondary school teachers, school administrators, and experts in education attended the Teacher Training Seminar during IEW in Sofia. Above 250 students, parents, teachers, lecturers and researchers visited the Fulbright Advising Center and were consulted on the U.S. educational system, opportunities to study, research and lecture in American colleges and universities, applying to U.S. educational institutions both on undergraduate and graduate level, American standardized tests, and sources of financial aid. Fulbright Educational Partnerships Program – Project Profile – Educational Partnerships Program
The University of Tennessee in partnership with Bourgas Free University is supporting the development of elementary and secondary-level curriculum model entitled My Place, Your Place, Our Place. This curriculum model will incorporate in the classrooms the teaching of local culture, civic education and globalization. Participants in this project involve K-12 school principals, teachers and students. Curriculum teams are testing the model in three schools in Bourgas (Bourgas High School of Economics and Commerce, Michail Lakatnick Primary School and Bratya Miladinovi Elementary School) and five schools in Tennessee (Wartburg Central High School, William Blount High School, Breaden High School, Cosby High School and Norris Elementary School). Conditions in some prisons remained harsh and included overcrowding, inadequate lavatory facilities, and insufficient heating and ventilation. All prisons were more than 70 years old. The Government expected that the introduction of a probation system in 2005 would partially alleviate the problem of overcrowding in prisons. At the end of June, the average prison density was 122.2 percent, with overcrowding at the prison in Bourgas being the worst (208.4 percent density); only the youth labor correction hostel in Boichinovtsi, the women's prison in Sliven, and the prison in Pazardjik were not overcrowded. The amount and type of food served was based on a table approved by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance. To meet the minimum caloric consumption, the average cost of food per day per prisoner was approximately $0.79 (1.18 leva); however, only two-thirds of that amount was allocated for food in the prisons budget.
