Numerous magazines and newspapers are published in East and West Malaysia, many in Malaysian, Chinese, and Tamil. Several are published in English, and some English-language newspapers in Kuala Lumpur serve a national market. Most foreigners read the New Straits Times (morning), The Star (morning), The Sun (morning), and the Malay Mail (afternoon), which give limited coverage to U.S. and international news and sports, and more extensive coverage to local news and to other life-style topics. The Asian Wall Street Journal and Asian editions of USA Today, Time, Newsweek, and Reader’s Digest are sold locally. Policy Initiatives. In conformity with a prime ministerial order released in late 2000, all levels of government began to show new initiatives with respect to drugs, with the goal of eliminating opium by 2006. In March, the Seventh Party Congress of the Lao Communist Party set an even more ambitious deadline for opium elimination--2005. The government sponsored many seminars, training workshops, and public gatherings devoted to the topic of drug prevention. Demand reduction programs and activities were introduced in schools, factories, and programs of Lao women and youth unions. Counternarcotics sports events and concerts were held. The Ministry of Education, with assistance from the German government, developed educational curricula for demand reduction and distributed them in the schools. The Jerudong International School (JIS) opened in 1997, and has an essentially British curriculum. It currently operates between 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (Monday–Friday), depending on the grade level. The facilities at JIS are outstanding. The school offers an Olympic size pool, other sports and recreation facilities, science labs, and “specialist rooms” in the areas of technology, music, art, and home economics that are equipped with up-to-date resources and equipment.
