Buddy Bolden, a cornet player who led bands in New Orleans from the mid 1890s until 1906, had a big impact on the early formation of jazz music. Although he never recorded any of his songs, Bolden was regarded by many of his peers as the first band leader to play improvisational jazz. He and many other jazz greats, such as Joe "King" Oliver, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, and "Jelly Roll" Morton, played their new music in Storyville until it was closed down in 1917. Morton was also an innovative and accomplished composer; he was the first jazzman to write his compositions in musical notation. In New York City in 1917, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, made up of five white musicians from New Orleans, made in the first jazz recording. That record, "Livery Stable Blues," was an immediate smash hit and sold more than any previous record. ... [Read More]

Current Developments in Colombia in the Fight Against Drug Trafficking and Narcoterrorism

And I think the biggest and most powerful evidence that the people of Colombia are winning is the suing for surrender and the seeking of better and better terms. And I think, obviously, the courage of President Uribe in not letting talk be a shield for war, but for peace and negotiations to only be considered when they are a path to peace is important. We all know from past history people who have been under pressure and been threatened with justice have used talk of negotiations to take that pressure off, to use it as a shield for continuing battle. ... Remarks toThe American Enterprise Institute

And so all of these have complicated the problem. They're still right there. We have a ceasefire in Darfur. They've agreed to make it real, in the sense of external monitoring. We're holding them to that. A case again where the AU is stepping up, the AU is hoping to have a meeting in Addis to make this real. We said we will do what we can, including lending people we already have on the ground. We'll sign an MOU with the AU. So it's not the U.S. And you can add five or six or ten of your people immediately so we have some capacity while you gin up your own capacity. We're not saying this is a case where big brother knows best and big brother is going to do it, but we're saying where somebody's got to do it and somebody's got to do it now. ... [Read More]

US Dept of State - Powell Speaks to Indian Youth on New Delhi Television

QUESTION: In my humble opinion, I look at America as the big brother of the world who cleans up the mess, especially of the coups. And so much of that you know how to execute your veto powers in the UN. But wasn't it intrinsic on your part to probably clean up the mess after America was directly linked to the mess. There are many coups still in the world, why don't you clean up...why believe in...why don't you believe in prevention better then cure, the phrase? ... [Read More]

Q: Did he have to explain to his brother why New York over Florida? ...

MR. FLEISCHER: The President is concerned and he regrets very much that this was not able to get done last year. But finger-pointing is not going to get anybody's unemployment extension carried out into law. What's necessary is people to work well together. The reason it didn't happen was because it was too big a divide last year between the Senate approach and the House approach. And the President would very much like to work with people to bridge the divide and not point fingers at any one part of the divide. ... [Read More]

Daily Press Briefing Thursday, January 2 - Transcript

QUESTION: Well, the elections in Seoul. He touched on this himself. You may have been away. The party that won ran on a platform expressing some discontent with the relationship, North Korea aside. You know, sort of South Korea is the junior partner and the United States is the big brother and sort of runs things. And there was a suggestion maybe they want to address that situation and have a stronger voice for South Korea. ... [Read More]

Ambassador replied we could begin exchange of views anytime. He noted big difference in Greek and Turkish positions on approaches to problem of Cyprus. However, it seemed to us that there was still room for maneuver and negotiation between Greek and Turkish positions.
