The main recreational activities relate to the beach. The popular beach promenades have all been illuminated and are now enjoyed by many both day and night. Games of soccer, volleyball and that incredible combination of the two, fute volley, seem to be going on 24 hours of the day. There are no public recreational facilities with swimming pools or golf courses. Club memberships within Rio range in price from the nicely affordable (Clube Flamengo) to the extravagantly expensive (Country Clube). While a few apartment buildings have facilities reserved for tenants, most buildings do not. The city does have a bicycle path that follows along certain beach areas. On Sundays and holidays, half of the primary beach avenue is closed to normal traffic to the great enjoyment of walkers, joggers, cyclists, and rollerbladers. ... [Read More]

At the end of August, off-duty policeman Clecio Barbosa Ayres shot and killed journalism student Thomas Schwarzenberg Vicente on the Imigrantes Highway between Sao Paulo and Santos. Vicente was returning with friends from the beach when he hit Ayres's bumper. Military highway police arrested Ayres and charged him with first-degree murder. Jason Falchook (b. 1976, New York, New York) attended The Corcoran College of Art + Design, Washington, D.C. (BFA 1998). Since then, he has exhibited his photographs in the Washington, D.C. area and beyond.
