Potential for new lower-nutrient foods. Genetic transfers may also result in changes in the levels of food plant nutrients. A recent study has shown, for example, that heart-protective phyto-estrogens are lower in one of the new genetically engineered soy varieties than in its traditional counterpart. While changes like this may be small and incremental, and appear unlikely to cause a major dietary deficiency, such changes could add up over time and impact public health in ways that are difficult to detect and hard to control. Such effects may well be small compared to the effects of the national tendency to consume non-nutritious foods or to consume inadequately balanced diets. Nevertheless, they should be monitored to assure that they do not become a problem. ... [Read More]

Department of State Washington File: Text: NRC Release on Regulation of Genetically Modified Plants

Thus far, only in very rare circumstances have pest-protected plants caused obvious health or environmental problems. For example, although a human allergic reaction to a new gene product has never been documented for a commercially available transgenic pest-protected plant, one such incident did occur at the research stage. In that study, people with a known allergic reaction to Brazil nuts experienced a similar reaction when they were exposed in skin-prick tests to soybeans containing a gene transferred from the Brazil nut. ... While the water is boiling in the big teapot, put the tea leaves in the small teapot and add a small quantity of the boiling water in order to clean the leaves. After that, pour more of the boiling water into the small teapot and put it on the embers to boil slowly. Meanwhile, put sugar and mint in the large glass. After the tea in the small teapot has been brewing for 10 to 15 minutes, pour some into the glass with mint and sugar and stir it. Pour this first taste into the small tea glasses, and serve it with roasted nuts. ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report

Praia's local public transportation system is moderately effective. Good taxis are relatively inexpensive and are readily obtained on busy downtown streets and close to popular locations (major hotels, airport, hospital, etc.). Calling and arranging for a taxi in advance is also possible, though there may be a small extra charge (an extra 100 CVE, roughly $1.20 USD) especially at night, and these taxis are usually reliable. There is no extra charge for luggage.  There are often standard, informal rates for trips around town, but to avoid problems, it's best to ask drivers to turn on the meter.  Taxi fare from the Embassy to the residential area in Prainha, where most Americans live, is about 150 CVE (roughly $1.60 USD).  The minimum starting fee is 100 CVE.  Note that after 10:00 p.m., the taxi meter charges more per/minute.  Tips are welcome but not standard.  By African standards, taxis are generally clean and well maintained.  Bus service is availa ...
