U.S. Embassy and WHO Launch New Training Initiative to Improve the Quality of HIV Testing - "Dar es Salaam, Tanzania"
A number of major HIV/AIDS initiatives are currently underway; the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), WHO 3 x 5 Initiative, Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM), and the World Bank's Multi-country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP). Accurate and reliable HIV testing will be critical to the success of these initiatives. It is estimated that millions of individuals will need to be tested to meet the objectives of interventions such as Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT), Counseling and Testing (CT), and safe blood programs. A major effort in training of staff at clinics and testing centers is therefore greatly needed to assure that these tests are properly used. As a follow-up to this meeting, assistance and guidance will be provided to countries requiring further support with expansion of training plans for use of HIV rapid tests in their respective countries. ...
