Self Help Program - "Gaborone Botswana"

The goal of the Self Help Program is to improve basic environmental, economic, social, and quality of life conditions in the communities. Projects must also contribute volunteer labor, expertise, and/or services to the endeavors. The greater the involvement and contribution from the local communities, the more likely the project grant will be approved. In the past, the Ambassador's Self Help Fund has, for example, supported counseling clinics for HIV/AIDS issues; contributed to home-based services for terminally ill; promoted day care centers for young children and AIDS orphans; purchased supplies and equipment for natural resource and environmental projects; supported income generating efforts for local citizens; and, strengthened agricultural projects in rural villages. The grant comes from a special fund from the U.S. Department of State, the “Ambassador’s Fund for Refugees Initiative”. The U.S. Embassy Gaborone successfully applied to this fund to support the project, “Towards the Enhancement of the Quality of Life in Dukwi Refugee Camp”. This project focuses on health education, counseling, and skills training for young refugees at Dukwi. If you wish to undertake study in the United States, either at graduate or undergraduate level, our Educational Advising Service, located within our information resource center, is able to provide advice and assistance regarding testing, application and entrance procedures for U.S. universities. It has directories of universities and colleges offering courses in particular subjects, information about possible scholarships and copies of college and university handbooks. The educational advisor also has a videotape concerning higher education in the United States, which is shown in the video center every Tuesday at 1400 hours.
