With the completion of the six-berth Container Terminal 9 in November 2004, Hong Kong's container terminal handling capacity is 18 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year, which will be able to cope with the forecast growth in demand to the end of this decade. The container terminals handle about 60 percent of the Port's total throughput. The river trade terminal, mid-stream operators and other facilities handle the remaining 40 percent. The Hong Kong Government commissioned a study on "Hong Kong Port - Master Plan 2020" to formulate a competitive, sustainable strategy and a master plan for Hong Kong's port development, including the location of a new container terminal and related infrastructure, for the coming twenty years. The study has been presented to industry for consultation and will be presented to the Legislative Council in early 2005.
