II In Indonesia, USAID has been partnering with NGOs to support community-based forest management. USAID offered NGOs training in oversight, management, human resources, and finances. USAID's NGO partners have been very successful in achieving local recognition for community forests through such tools as community mapping. In West Kalimantan, the local government recognized the communities' rights to forests after community mapping. The communities then protected their forests from fires while an adjacent timber concession burned. Community mapping has also facilitated adoption of community-managed zones in Lore Lindu National Park. A formal decree awarded indigenous people the right to remain and control their traditional lands in the park. They have been effective in keeping out illegal loggers and poachers. ... [Read More]

Policy and Program Developments Overview for 2000For U.S. international antidrug programs, the year 2000 was one of important accomplishments and serious challenges. Long-term cooperation with our Western Hemisphere allies continued to bear fruit. We successfully attacked drug crop expansion, enhanced interdiction efforts, worked to arrest leaders of drug trafficking syndicates, and narrowed the opportunities for the drug trade to launder drug profits. At the same time, we provided our partners essential training assistance to strengthen their law enforcement and judicial systems, while helping them with programs to reduce drug consumption in their own countries. Iximche, the ancient capital of the Maya-Cakchiquel kingdom, and where the first capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala was founded, and Mixco Viejo, a fortress city of the Maya-Cakchiquel empire, are located within the Department of Chimaltenango, approximately 2 hours’ drive from Guatemala City. Quirigua, within an hour’s drive of Rio Dulce a short distance from Puerto Barrios, is the site of some of the tallest stelae of the Maya civilization. K’umarcaaj, an archeological site also known as Utatlan, is approximately an hour’s drive from Chichicastenango (3 hours from Guatemala City).
