U.S. Government Assistance Three subjects from the West African nation of Benin were arrested in Chicago on September 19, 2003, for accepting a parcel containing nearly 500 grams of heroin. US Department Of State Post Report Many, but not all, apartments have a “cave,” a small basement storage room assigned to each apartment. These can range from dry to very wet. Caves are provided on an “as is” basis. Very few apartments also come with a small attic room intended for use by a maid or nanny. These are very small and lacking amenities, such as a toilet or shower. Post does not maintain these rooms. Most apartments do not include a parking space. Most personnel rent a space at a parking garage and reimbursement is made per post policy. Leased apartments tend to be in old buildings with small elevators. US Department Of State Post Report Virtually all housing in Kiev is apartments. The Mission acquires the best properties available. Although kitchens and bathrooms are modern, most apartments are not comparable to those in the U.S. in terms of space, storage areas, and layout. Closets are rare and kitchen cabinets are few. Bathrooms may be large, but have no cabinetry. In securing new leases, post requires the landlords to install a wardrobe in every bedroom. Apartment lobbies, elevators, and hallways and sometimes the exterior of the buildings are often dingy and dirty, but are improving. [Read More]
Europe and Central Asia Corruption. Corruption has been the most significant problem within Georgia's law enforcement agencies. Georgia's anti- corruption efforts continue to be hampered by the widespread tolerance of corruption within Georgian society. During 2001 the Government of Georgia formed a commission to reform the law enforcement agencies (so-called "power ministries"). The commission developed a strategy for reorganization that was forwarded to the Georgian National Security Council; however, no significant changes were made. In any case, none of these proposed measures can truly ameliorate the situation given the low wages of officials and poor standard of behavior from those in charge that nourish wide-scale, low level corruption. The new hope of eradicating corruption within the system emerged with the appointment of a new Minister of Internal Affairs, who has publicly and repeatedly announced his commitment to combating corruption and the trafficking ... US Department Of State Post Report Apartments and houses are scattered throughout the city and it's immediate suburbs. Apartments tend to be most convenient to the Embassy and city center whereas houses are located further out. No housing is available in the city center (it is a commercial district), however some apartments are within ten - fifteen minutes walk. ... Competetion for the best housing units is high, as are prices. The Embassy GSO staff makes every effort to find an ideal property for each employee. Some apartments and houses, however, have layouts which are not typical in the U.S. Many apartments, for example, have large entry halls (foyers) but relatively small kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Many houses have a large amount of "dead space" and do not have closets (wardrobes are provided). FurnishingsLast Updated: 1/13/2005 11:11 AM ... [Read More]
US Department Of State Post Report Residences are renovated to accommodate the electrical needs of a Western occupant. Kitchens and bathrooms receive particularly extensive renovation in an attempt to bring them as close to Western standards as possible. Closets, bathroom cabinets, and food pantries are generally not found within apartments. However, the Embassy carpenter has constructed shelves and cabinets to provide storage space. Apartments furnished by the Embassy have one wardrobe per bedroom. Due to vandalism of cars, the Embassy provides garages at apartments. Most residences are in the heart of Bishkek and are a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Embassy. ... [Read More]

US Department Of State Post Report Parking. Most houses and apartments have garages but they often can accommodate only compact or subcompact cars. Single garages in private dwellings or one parking space per family in apartment garages are the norm. ... Swimming in indoor pools is a year round activity in Brussels. The cool summers encourage only the hardy to venture into outdoor swimming areas. But beachcombers find the North Sea coast with its wide, sandy beaches well worth the 2-hour drive from Brussels. There are many resort areas; Ostend and Het Zoute are probably the best known and the most expensive. The season at the seashore is usually short and the water temperatures compare with those along the northern New England coast. Modern, comfortable summer cottages and apartments, as well as many reasonably priced pensions, are available in seacoast towns. ... [Read More]
