Facilities include a large library, two computer labs, four science labs, two gymnasiums, and a theater as well as outdoor playgrounds, sports fields, and basketball and tennis courts. The school has a full extracurricular activity program, which includes intramural and interscholastic sports (soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and swimming), drama productions, student newspapers, student government, literary magazines, band, and choir. Employees receive a Living Quarters Allowance (LQA), and should be prepared to pay the first and last months’ rent upon signing of the lease. Contact the Administrative Office in advance of arrival for an estimate of rental scales. Reimbursement for LQA expenses can be expected to begin about 4 weeks after submission of the request to the Embassy. The advance payment of the last month’s rent is not reimbursed until final departure from leased quarters. A good private primary school, Westmorland Primary, has an average class size of 24. It has a few trained Montessori teachers and takes children in nursery class; after nursery class they join kindergarten and start basic reading, writing, and math. The school year is divided into three terms, running from early September until mid-July. Vacations are held at Christmas, Easter, and the long summer holiday. Westmorland Primary is part of Westmorland School, which is known to have the island’s highest standard of education, based upon CXC results. The primary department has few vacancies and securing a place may prove difficult.
