Bangladesh (06/05)

Most Bangladeshis earn their living from agriculture. Although rice and jute are the primary crops, wheat and vegetables are assuming greater importance. Tea is grown in the northeast. Because of Bangladesh's fertile soil and normally ample water supply, rice can be grown and harvested three times a year in many areas. Due to a number of factors, Bangladesh's labor-intensive agriculture has achieved steady increases in food grain production despite the often unfavorable weather conditions. These include better flood control and irrigation, a generally more efficient use of fertilizers, and the establishment of better distribution and rural credit networks. With 26.19 million metric tons produced in 2003-04 (July-June), rice is Bangladesh's principal crop. By comparison, wheat output in 2004 was 1.3 million metric tons. Population pressure continues to place a severe burden on productive capacity, creating a food deficit, especially of wheat. Foreign assistance and commercial imports fi ... [Read More]

The climate of Bangladesh ranges from subtropical to tropical. The humidity remains high all year and reaches between 90%–95% from June to September. Bangladesh has three main seasons. The mild (70s [ºF]) or cold season, from mid-October to the end of February, is characterized by sunny skies, drier weather, and cool (high 50s [ºF]) evenings. During the hot season, from March until the end of May, there is quite a change. The early part is pleasant (75ºF), but as the monsoon approaches, hot (95ºF) temperatures and high humidity make life difficult. The monsoon season lasts from June to October. At the beginning of the monsoon, the continuous rains cool the atmosphere. Temperatures are milder (85ºF to 90ºF), but the humidity can be oppressive. ... [Read More]

A lot of people today, including many scientists, are concerned about climate change. But what exactly is climate, and why are so many people worried about it changing? What is climate? Climate is the average weather in a particular area over a length of time. For example, if we take 30 years of daily temperature readings of a city and average them, the result is what climatologists call a "climate normal." If you listen to an evening weather report, the reporter might say something like, "Today the temperature reached 34 degrees. That’s 3 degrees higher than the normal temperature of 31 ...
