In a country where navigable rivers and streams surpass roads in total distance, water transport is very interesting, especially on the smaller rivers, where you can see daily life along the banks. Of course, traveling by boat is slow and easily avoided, so many travelers never go out of their way to take long river trips, settling instead for a short ferry ride across a river. Rape is illegal; however, spousal rape is not a crime unless the wife is under 12 years of age. The Government stated that rape was not common in populous urban areas but occurred more often in remote areas. The Government did not release statistics regarding rape. It was generally unsafe for women to travel during hours of darkness without a male escort. Employers who employed women at night typically had to supply a "ferry" bus or truck to return workers to their homes. Use of taxis at night was particularly hazardous for women of the risk of rape or robbery. Prostitutes traveling at night must typically pay substantial additional fees to taxi operators or risk being raped, robbed, or turned over to the police. For a change from the main island of Singapore, take the cable car at Mount Faber or the World Trade Center to the island of Sentosa. At 385 feet above sea level, Mount Faber is the perfect spot to watch the sun set and city lights appear. Telescopes provide an excellent view of the harbor, the Southern Islands and on a clear day, the Indonesian Archipelago. The cable car spans the water to Sentosa Island. A monorail encircling the island affords visitors a view of Sentosa's lush greenery. An unspoiled island with a natural forest and quiet village, it features a superb 18-hole golf course on the sea, the world's first coralarium and swimming lagoon (pool), and a picnic area. Also on the island is the Surrender Chamber, a replica of the site of the original surrender of the island of Singapore by the Japanese Occupation Forces to the Allied Forces during World War II.
