IIIa. Country Narratives - Countries A through G

Afghanistan (Tier 3)Afghanistan is a country of origin and transit for women and children trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and labor. Internal trafficking of women and children for purposes of sexual exploitation and forced labor also occurs. Afghanistan was under two different governments during this period: the Taliban and the Afghan Interim Authority (AIA). Until December 22, 2001, when the AIA took over there was no functioning central government. During most of 2001, the Taliban, a Pashtun-dominated fundamentalist Islamic movement, controlled approximately ninety percent of the country. Taliban forces were responsible for disappearances of women and children, many of whom were trafficked to Pakistan and the Gulf States. Under the Taliban, women and girls were subjected to rape, kidnapping, and forced marriage. Since the AIA took over, there ar ... [Read More]

Societal discrimination continued to limit opportunities for women in fields traditionally dominated by men. Men earned more than women, and women generally did not receive equal pay for equal work. The Constitution provides for women's rights, and includes a significant number of laws to provide for equality of treatment among men and women to eliminate discrimination and sexual harassment and to create conditions that allow both men and women to combine work and family. The law mandates the division of retirement benefit claims in the case of divorce, under which the benefit claims accrued during the time of marriage are split between the parties, whether they worked outside the home or not. In a precedent ruling on gender discrimination in June, a court upheld a woman's claim for equal pay for equal work and ordered the payment of the salary difference since she began legal action. ... Department of State Washington File: Transcript: Albright Remarks at Vital Voices Conference

In so doing, we must also be sure to respect and value one another, understanding that although every woman wants freedom of expression, not every free woman will express herself in the same way. No country or culture has a monopoly on what is right for a woman to think or believe, or for that matter, to wear. Our goal is to help women everywhere to express themselves. Before closing, I must add that the work America does on behalf of advancing the status of women and girls requires resources. Unfortunately, the funds we have available for foreign policy today have not kept pace with our responsibilities. For years, our workload has gone up, while our budget has gone down. ... [Read More]

Anti-Semitism in Europe Today

Thank you for the invitation to speak at the Fogelman Center about the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe and the efforts that the U.S. Government and the international community are taking to reverse this trend. I especially want to thank Rachel Shankman of Facing History and Ourselves for arranging this evening. Also, B’nai B’rith of Memphis, the University of Memphis Department of Judaic Studies and Christian Brothers College. Thank you for your sponsorship. It is always a pleasure for me to come home to Memphis where my family roots run deep. Anti-Semitism has plagued our world for centuries. From the most pernicious -- the Holocaust -- to subtler, vile forms of anti-Semitism, anti-Semitism dehumanizes individuals and destroys communities. For centuries, we have witnessed the traditional anti-Jewish prejudice espoused by ultranationalists and others who assert that the Jewish communi ... [Read More]

V. Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

Cyprus is a destination country for women trafficked from Eastern and Central Europe for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Traffickers who forced women into prostitution continued to fraudulently recruit victims for work as dancers in cabarets and nightclubs on short-term "artiste" visas, for work in pubs and bars on employment visas, or for illegal work on tourist or student visas. There was increasing evidence of Chinese women being trafficked for sexual exploitation in Cyprus. The Government of Cyprus does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. Cyprus made some progress in its anti-trafficking efforts over the past year. The new police anti-trafficking unit produced successful results and showed vigilance in combating the problem. Government recognition of the problem improve ... [Read More]
