The most challenging issues surrounding agricultural biotechnology involve labeling. European consumers have generally been encouraged by consumer activists to demand labels identifying foods that have been developed through biotechnology. Several food retailers (especially in the United Kingdom) have tried to exploit the public concern as a marketing tool. Europe has labeling policies in place, but they have not yet been able to establish workable regulations or procedures. They are now grappling with difficult technical issues such as which methods to use to identify traces of biotechnology-derived ingredients. They also are trying to determine what percent of ingredients in processed foods can be derived from biotechnology and still allow the food to qualify as "biotechnology-free." ... [Read More]

France is a destination country for women trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and involuntary domestic servitude, primarily from Eastern and Central Europe and Africa. The number of Chinese women trafficked to France for sexual exploitation increased in 2004. The government estimates that there are 10,000 to 12,000 trafficking victims in France, 3,000-8,000 of whom are children forced into prostitution and labor. Nigerian trafficking networks continued to expand their activities in France. Trafficking of Brazilian women and girls for sexual exploitation to French Guiana — a French possession — remained a serious problem. Austria has imposed marketing bans on some agricultural biotechnology seeds despite existing EU approvals. The European Commission has not yet taken steps to overturn the bans, despite the fact that the EU’s Scientific Committee has found no justification for the bans and the EU Moratorium on new approvals has ended. For future varieties, new EU legislation on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms and on traceability and labeling requires Austria to allow GMO seeds on the fields and foods in the stores.
