US Department Of State Post Report

There are a variety of shops and stores in Belgrade.  Shopping as an activity in Belgrade consumes a good bit of time, because the stores are often small, and the inventory in each one is limited.  You may have to look around quite a while to find what you're looking for.  Meat, dairy products, staples like flour and sugar, and seasonal fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year. Processed foods (i.e., macaroni and cheese in a box, microwave popcorn) are starting to be seen here, but not necessarily the recognized types or brands.  Ethnic foods and typically American foods like chocolate chips and peanut butter are not usually available.  Employees are authorized a consumables allowance of 2,500 net pounds for a 2-year tour and 3,750 net pounds for a 3-year tour.  Department of Defense personnel are authorized 3,000 pounds regardless of the length of tour. ... Department of State Washington File: Strengthen Efforts Against Child Trafficking, U.S. Urges OSCE States

The OSCE action plan includes police training, legislative advice and other assistance to states in the fight against trafficking, as well as an economic component directed toward at-risk individuals and at businesses that might be used by traffickers, such as hotels and tour operators exploiting the sex trade. ...

In terms of its general policy on trafficking, the United States has been urging other countries to impose serious penalties on traffickers; adopt laws that prohibit trafficking and that also provide for victim protection and assistance; ensure that legal tools exist to apprehend "sex tourists"; and support preventive education to curb demand for trafficking, especially the demand created by military and civilian peacekeepers and other international personnel in conflict regions. ... The Slovene economy is extremely diverse.  Manufacturing, which has made considerable progress in recent years, provides almost 30% of the gross domestic product.  It is followed in importance by trade, business and financial service, transport, and agency business.  Tourism is directly responsible for only around 3% of the gross domestic product, but it is extremely important, both for its general effect on the Slovene economy and for the balance of payments.  In 1997, Slovenia's tourism industry provided a US$1.2 billion contribution to the current account. ... Both a hunting license, “Jagdkarte,” and hunting permission card, “Jagderlaubnis,” are necessary before taking part in a hunt. Hunting premiums are charged in accordance with the type of game taken. These charges vary, but are generally very high by U.S. standards. Hunting is by invitation only and always done on game preserves. Contacts can be arranged to secure invitations through local tourist agencies. Special invitations to the diplomatic corps in Vienna are rare. ...

The American community in Vienna is not a tightly knit social group. This is understandable when one considers that a metropolis like Vienna offers much in the way of recreation, entertainment, and varied social contacts. Social recreation generally takes the form of cocktail parties, buffet suppers, dinners, receptions, and “Heurigen.” Social activity depends largely on individual inclination. The Community Liaison Office and the AEA Recreation Committee organize a number of tours, trips, and social activities throughout the year. ... [Read More]

V. Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

France is a destination country for women trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and involuntary domestic servitude, primarily from Eastern and Central Europe and Africa. The number of Chinese women trafficked to France for sexual exploitation increased in 2004. The government estimates that there are 10,000 to 12,000 trafficking victims in France, 3,000-8,000 of whom are children forced into prostitution and labor. Nigerian trafficking networks continued to expand their activities in France. Trafficking of Brazilian women and girls for sexual exploitation to French Guiana — a French possession — remained a serious problem. The Government of France fully complies with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking. Although the government did not provide full data on investigations, prosecutions, convictions, and sentences, the Secretary of State has ... [Read More]
