Belgium

CRIME:  Belgium remains a relatively safe country; however, visitors should take all reasonable precautions because street thefts, purse snatchings, and pick pocketing occur frequently, particularly in the major cities and in train stations.  In Brussels, crime continues to increase annually with pick pocketing, purse snatching, and theft of light luggage and laptops being the most common.  These crimes are especially prevalent in the public transportation system (subway, bus, and tram) and at Brussels’ three major train stations -- the North Station (Noordstation or Gare du Nord), the Central Station (Centraal Station or Gare Central) and especially at the South Station (Zuidstation or Gare du Midi).  The latter is a primary international train hub, and travelers are advised to pay ... Gare du Nord train station, where the express trains from the airport arrive in Paris, is also a high-risk area for pickpocketing and theft.  Travelers should also beware of thefts that occur on both overnight and day trains, especially on trains originating in Spain, Italy, and Belgium.  Additionally, several sexual assaults involving American citizens have occurred in recent years in the immediate vicinity of the Gare du Nord train station. ... US Department Of State Post Report

Employees are also advised to exercise extra caution in securing important documents, passports, cash and credit cards while traveling around Europe.  Tri-Mission personnel have experienced theft in airports, train stations, and on trains.  Thieves employ various techniques while on trains, from paying off conductors to blatantly breaking into a cabin while occupants sleep.  When traveling by train in southern Europe, employees are advised to secure cabin doors by other means (i.e. rope or a belt) in addition to any door locks. The Post and Its AdministrationLast Updated:  12/18/2003 7:37 AM  ... Department of State Washington File: Transcript: Ashcroft Thanks Austria for Help on Terrorism, Iraq, Crime

ASHCROFT: Let me just say that on the fundamental issues of human dignity and freedom, and these are the basic foundations of a community, whether they be cities, or states, or nations, or the world community, we are in total agreement. So that if we are talking of some tiny fraction of disagreement, it's not on fundamental issues. The fundamental issues are 100 percent agreement, at least from my perspective. And I am grateful for that, and that provides us with the basis for the kind of cooperation that's not only founded on this fundamental agreement on values, but it's also based on trust in the individuals involved, and in the competence and capacity of the governments involved. And as we share information and data, which provides and promotes and undergirds our ability to provide security for the freedoms which are important to both of our nations. It's not just important that we have a unity of values, but that we have a confidence in the capacity of the systems, and we exchange ... [Read More]

CRIME:  Austria has a low crime rate, and violent crime is rare.  However, crimes involving theft of personal property have increased in recent years.  Travelers should be particularly careful not to leave valuables at their table while serving themselves from the breakfast buffet.  Travelers are also targets of pickpockets and purse-snatchers who operate where tourists tend to gather.  Some of the spots where such crimes are most frequently reported include Vienna’s two largest train stations, the plaza around St. Stephan’s Cathedral and the nearby pedestrian shopping areas (in Vienna’s First District). ... V. Country Narratives -- Countries A through G

Croatia is a country of transit, and to a lesser extent, source and destination country for women and girls trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Victims generally originate in Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other parts of Eastern Europe, and are trafficked into Western Europe. The Government of Croatia does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. During the reporting period, Croatia began to intensify efforts to combat trafficking in persons and took nascent steps to improve its response to trafficking. The government implemented targeted law enforcement training and increased its capacity to identify and assist victims. It adopted a national action plan, appointed an anti-trafficking coordinator, and provided direct funds to imple ... [Read More]
