Port Sudan and the Red Sea Coast: The coast is over 700 miles from Khartoum.  Port Sudan is an hour away by jet, or less than three hours by propeller plane.  The drive to Port Sudan takes about 14 hours; only a high clearance vehicle is recommended for this trip.  A small resort at Arusa is north of Port Sudan, and the ancient city of Suakin is 60 kilometers south of Port Sudan.  The Red Sea has some of the world’s most beautiful coral.  Snorkeling and scuba diving in Port Sudan are popular, and the Port Sudan Hilton provides an excellent base for excursions along the coast.  In addition to the Hilton, there is at least one other independent dive center in Port Sudan offering scuba instruction. ... Camping on the east coast is popular. Driving trips to the oasis of Al Ain, about 100 miles inland, to the beaches of Fujairah and Khor Fakkan on the east coast, and northward to the greener areas of Ras Al Khaimah, all provide beautiful changes of scenery. A Hilton Hotel at Fujairah and the Meridien Hotel near Khor Fakkan are modern, attractive lodges that help to ensure overnighting for non-campers as well. There, one can boat, fish, scuba dive, snorkel, swim, picnic, and play tennis. Dubai, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah all have small but interesting museums, and Sharjah has a world-class natural history museum. Al Ain has an extensive, if somewhat shabby zoo, which is worth a visit during cool weather, as well as "Fun City," an amusement park popular with families. Dubai also has a small zoo, and with its picturesque creek filled with dhows and its historic wind towers, offers weekend diversions. Several archeological sites have been discovered and can be reached easily. The Heritage ... [Read More]

About the size of West Virginia, Croatia covers 56,500 km2 (21,829 mi2) of mainland and somewhat less than 32,000 km2 (12,316 mi2) of sea.  The Adriatic coastline, which includes 1,185 islands, islets, and reefs -- of which only 66 are inhabited -- is 5,740 km (3,566 miles) long, and is famed for its clear waters.  The highest peak is the Dinara Mountain at 1,831 m (5951 feet) above sea level.  The republic swings around like a boomerang from the Pannonian Plains of Slavonia between the Sava, Drava, and Danube Rivers, across hilly central Croatia to the Istrian Peninsula, then south through Dalmatia along the rugged Adriatic coast.  It is bordered by Slovenia to the north and north-west, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia-Montenegro to the east and southeast, and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east and south.  Croatia’s geography is diverse with its rocky coastline, densely wooded mountains, plains, lakes, ... Madagascar's geography creates many climatic subdivisions.   The coastal climate is hot and tropical, with the east coast receiving the most rainfall (more than 160 inches of rain in Maroantsetra.).  This is due to the effect of moisture-laden trade winds off the Indian Ocean as they encounter the steep escarpment of the Madagascar coastline.  The east coast is also most affected by the cyclones which periodically hit the island, often causing extensive damage. East coast temperatures reach an average high of 85 in the summer and 72 in the winter. ... [Read More]

Suva has sufficient paved streets for the number of cars in the city. A generally good paved road circles most of the main island of Viti Levu. From Suva to Lautoka, following the southern and western coasts, the coastal road is called the Queens Road. Many of Fiji’s tourist hotels are located along this stretch. From Lautoka to Suva, following the northern and eastern coasts, the road is called the King’s Road and includes a 30-mile stretch of rough gravel road along the northeast coast. Historically, the mining and petroleum sector has contributed 25% of PNG's GDP and from 65 to 80% of export earnings. While production from older major ventures, including the Ok Tedi copper mine, the Porgera gold mine and the Kutubu oil fields, has begun to decline, new projects are under development or active exploration. The Lihir Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines outside South Africa, commenced production in 1994 in New Ireland Province. A new oil field was also opened at Gobe in the Gulf and Southern Highlands Provinces in 1998 and the Moran field began production in 2001. ... [Read More]
