Department of State Washington File: U.S. Cites Support for Eliminating Agriculture Export Subsidies Cairns Group members and some other countries fear that the U.S. and EU delegations will make no concessions in agriculture and services negotiations without parallel progress in the non-agricultural negotiations, said Stoler, who formerly served as head of the U.S. mission at the WTO in Geneva. ... He said rules-based approaches on export credit put forward by the United States and the Cairns Group have attracted more support than an EU proposal based on quantitative and budgetary restrictions. ... Australia takes a prominent part in many other UN activities, including peacekeeping, nonproliferation and disarmament negotiations, and narcotics control. Australia also is active in meetings of the Commonwealth Regional Heads of Government and the Pacific Islands Forum, and has been a leader in the Cairns Group--countries pressing for agricultural trade reform in World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations--and in the APEC forum. ... It has done this by remaining visible and active since the end of the round. One of its members (Ambassador Danai from Thailand) was appointed the first chair of the WTO Committee on Agriculture. Ambassador Danai's successor as chair, appointed in early 1997, is another Cairns Group member Ambassador Osorio from Colomb ... [Read More]
