You may bring animals into Sudan with the correct import permit.  If you plan to bring or ship pets, inform the General Services Officer in advance of your arrival and/or the pet’s arrival, and fax copies of the animal’s health and rabies inoculation certificates issued by a registered veterinarian as well as a description of the animal.  Advance notice will permit time to obtain the permit license and to arrange for a Sudanese Government veterinarian to be on hand when the pet arrives to expedite its clearance into the country.  You should hand-carry original documents relating to your pet with you as well as attach documents to the animal’s shipping container.  Sudanese embassies and consulates can also issue pet import permits.  Pets arriving without a permit are subject to quarantine and possible extermination. ... Maldives has few laundries and no drycleaning shops. Shoe repair facilities are fair. Imported, high-quality goods are expensive and scarce. Bring sufficient quantities of hair-care products, perfume, and cosmetics for those who have special preferences. These items also may be imported. Spare parts for household articles must be imported. Electricians' and plumbers' services are available and are of fair quality. Hairdressers and barbers are available; their charges are moderate. ... [Read More]

Imported rice is a staple in the Marshallese diet. Imported chicken is the major meat; some fish is available, but most local families who catch fish only take enough to feed their own families. Until recently the only locally grown fruits and vegetables were coconut, pandanus, papaya, bananas, and breadfruit.  Recently the Taiwan government started a farm in Laura, which has produced wonderful vegetables such as tomatoes, corn, and peppers, which can be purchased in the local grocery stores. ... Pet owners must notify the post prior to arrival to obtain an import permit. Do not route your pet (alone or accompanied) via Australia, where it will be confiscated and destroyed. Personnel bringing pets through Hong Kong or Singapore must have prior authorization from those governments to do so. This authorization is required regardless of the carrying airline and must be obtained directly from the governments of those countries. Instructions for applying for this authorization can be obtained at any British (for Hong Kong) or Singaporean embassy. The desired transit time must be stated on the authorization. If pets arrive without the authorization (even if only in transit), they will be quarantined at your expense or destroyed. Firearms and AmmunitionLast Updated:  11/5/2003 2:40 PM  [Read More]

A recognized scuba certification card is required for all equipment rentals and scuba trips. The local dive shops, few as they are, offer air refills. Equipment rental is becoming more and more difficult, with unpredictable quality and availability. We recommend divers bring their own regulators, BCDs, gauges, and as much gear as possible with them. There are no official diving schools; however, one location offers PADI certification training once per year and sporadic advanced diving. Prospective divers should try to become certified before arrival. ... [Read More]

If you require regular prescription medicine, make arrangements for refills to be sent to you from an American pharmacy through the diplomatic pouch. Pharmaceuticals in Fiji are imported mainly from Australia and New Zealand, with a few imported from the U.S., Canada and India. Intravenous fluids are imported from Baxter Company in Australia. Insulin is imported from Lilly Company. Most antibiotics are imported from Alpha Med in Australia. Vaccines are imported from New Zealand and Australia. Fiji has no capacity to test the quality of these imported drugs, other than screening drugs for expiration dates and any unusual characteristics such as color or shape. Questionable drugs are sent overseas for testing. American over-the-counter medicines are generally not available. Bring a supply of anything you regularly use, or arrange for it to be sent to you. Community HealthLast Upda ... [Read More]

U.S. Government personnel are exempt from local income and certain other taxes. Direct consumer taxes and service charges, such as those imposed on hotel and restaurant bills, and airport departure, are paid. U.S. Government personnel are technically exempt from taxes on gasoline and other items, but an efficient method for enforcing this has yet to be established. All items imported duty free by U.S. Government employees must be for the exclusive use of the employee or dependents. Such property may not be imported for the sole purpose of sale, barter, or exchange. Personal property imported with free-entry privileges is not normally authorized for sale to persons without free-entry privileges. Department of State Washington File: Text: Commerce Secretary Mineta on Coral Reef Preservation

When I became Commerce Secretary in July, I set the establishment of a new ocean ethic as one of my prime objectives. I believed the President's direction to further ocean exploration and conservation was right and important as we decided the future agenda of this country. Technology has created a whole new set of opportunities to dive deeper, discover new species, and share this information more widely, more quickly, and in more detail. I wanted to be sure that future Secretaries of Commerce will include ocean stewardship among their top priorities. ... [Read More]
