In Indonesia, USAID has been partnering with NGOs to support community-based forest management. USAID offered NGOs training in oversight, management, human resources, and finances. USAID's NGO partners have been very successful in achieving local recognition for community forests through such tools as community mapping. In West Kalimantan, the local government recognized the communities' rights to forests after community mapping. The communities then protected their forests from fires while an adjacent timber concession burned.
