G) The Caribbean

As Hato airport tightened control, traffickers began to move to other Antillean airports, challenging law enforcement control at those locations. For example, from January to May Bonaire arrested seven “mules,” but after the transfer of a major KLM route to Bonaire in June, 40 were arrested through September. Sint Maarten detected increasing numbers of “mules” and made plans to improve its drug detection technology with Dutch assistance. In addition to go-fast activity and smuggling via commercial airlines, large quantities of narcotics moved through in containers, as indicated by seizures from containers in 2002. In November, 1,200 kilograms of marijuana were seized from a container in Sint Maarten in a joint operation with the French side of the island, Saint Martin. Statistics on significant seizures in 2002 indicate that Dutch Sint Maarten poses a serious threat as a staging ground for moving cocaine and heroin into the U.S. market. ... [Read More]

The BahamasI. Summary Because of its geographic location, The Bahamas continues to be utilized as a major transit country for cocaine and marijuana bound for the U.S. from South America and the Caribbean. US Department Of State Post Report

Curaçao has well over 50,000 vehicles. Driving is on the right. Gasoline prices are currently approximately US$3.80 per gallon, but a coupon system and tax rebate for consular personnel brings the effective price down to approximately $1.40 per gallon. Routine service station maintenance is adequate and reasonable but spare parts and body repair work are expensive. The high humidity, salt air and intense sunlight cause automobile tires and bodies to deteriorate rapidly. Undercoating is recommended and may be done locally at reasonable prices. Overall, roads are fair to good but some parts of Curaçao can only be reached by rough dirt tracks. ... [Read More]
