Livestock producers use hormones because they speed up growthrates and produce a leaner carcass more in line with consumerpreferences for diets with reduced fat and cholesterol. Hormonesenable producers to reduce costs by lowering the amount of feednecessary to produce meat while increasing the weight of acarcasssignificantly. Growth-promoting hormones approved for use in theUnited States are compounds that either naturally occur in ananimal's body or mimic naturally occurring compounds.
